Zachnchrissy 9 Posted April 30, 2015 I am 3 days post op. I am able to drink 2 ounces at a time but I'm still experiencing chest pains when I swallow and the liquid hits. Is this normal? 1 Tashh reacted to this
tcon 305 Posted April 30, 2015 Sorry to hear you're having problems. Have you called your surgeon?
Smokinjoe781 4 Posted April 30, 2015 Doc told me the pain in the upper Chest is the gas they used to fill your abdomen so they have room too work eventually it will dissipate.
Comeflywithme 402 Posted April 30, 2015 YES It's NORMAL and I had that too, it'll last for about 7 days or so, then becoming less and less. MAKE SURE you eat and sip verrryyyy verrrryyyy slowly to help and IF you're eating -- chew it very very well. WALK WALK WALK WALK to help with your bloating and that will decrease the tummy discomfort and therefore you won't have pain when swallowing soon. Good luck, it DOES get better soon.... hang in there... 1 Tashh reacted to this
Zachnchrissy 9 Posted April 30, 2015 I am only allowed clear fluids for 6 days. broth, Water, tea, sugar free popsicles....the pain is right under my breast bone in the middle and extends to both the right and left side. It leaves as fast as it comes on. I guess I'm just a little scared cause it's my chest.
Zamanthia 1 Posted May 1, 2015 I had hernia repair in addition to the sleeve and I am definitely having the same type pains, but I am a week out as of today and it is better and much less frequent. Cold really seems to set it off. Hang in there, it gets better!
Cujucuyo 34 Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) Completely normal, here's a breakdown of the things that worried me that would be permanent and went away with time (I'm 2 months post op as of today): 1.) Drinking Water hurt my throat or my stomach as it went down: Went away after a week or two, now I can drink much bigger gulps than before and can finish a 10Oz glass in 2 minutes. 2.) Stomach pain as I ate Jello, soft foods, etc. ~ Went away after 1-2 weeks. 3.) Not being able to eat semi-solid foods without pain ~ Went away after 3-4 weeks. (Follow your doctors orders) 4.) After eating some semi-solid foods it got stuck in my throat - Went away after 4+ weeks (5 for solids), your esophagus is irritated/damaged from the tube they inserted during surgery. You WILL get that feeling if you do over eat a lot, right now I can eat 3/4 of a deep fried chicken breast without feeling like I'm about to vomit. Welcome to hell, but don't worry, it's temporary, we've all been there and it's all downhill from there. Hetera 44 Posted May 6, 2015 I had hernia repair in addition to the sleeve and I am definitely having the same type pains, but I am a week out as of today and it is better and much less frequent. Cold really seems to set it off. Hang in there, it gets better! I'm having the same pain at the bottom of my solar plexus. Also had a hernia repair. No problems swallowing. Seems to occur intermittently. Feels like a painful "pulling," very muscular. Painful to take a deep breath, to let the diaphragm fully push down.
Jessica Radcliff 51 Posted May 9, 2015 I found that it doesnt feel as bad when i drink hot fluids. im almost a week out and when i drink room temp or cold fluids it feels like i drank a bubble but with tea I can drink it like i did before surgery. Teebaby 27 Posted May 10, 2015 I am 5 days post-op with a hernia repair as well and I am having the same experience. The best way to describe it is I can feel everything travel down after I swallow. It hurts a bit and feels very weird at the same time. All I know is I can't wait for it to go away because it makes it difficult for me to want to drink anything. 1 1 AJ01 and Rawlinos reacted to this
Jessica Radcliff 51 Posted May 10, 2015 I also had a hernia repair, I wonder if that is how it is for everyone with a hernia repair because of the sutures right next to the esophogus and the tightness there 1 Rawlinos reacted to this
Cujucuyo 34 Posted May 10, 2015 Don't worry guys you WILL be able to drink normally soon, I was also like you all dehydrated; it sucked for me because I used to constantly drink Water or diet soda and I was eager to drink more at that time. I'm two months out and I can drink all I want now, no uncomfortable feeling or pain (unless I chug down a glass of Water, I just fill my mouth and then swallow), give it time, I know it sucks right now but hang in there! Zachnchrissy 9 Posted May 11, 2015 I am finally three weeks today and doing great. I can drink anything with no problem and I started soft foods yesterday. I can eat one egg or 2 oz of tuna before my body tells me it's time to stop.
