It's so hard to ignore all the food commercials!

Recommended Posts

I am a week post op. I'm following the structured plan from my surgeon. But, I'm home for a few weeks recovering and these food commercials are EVERYWHERE! I really hope that someday soon they won't bother me. I know that I cannot eat any of the stuff in these commercials. I'm a week post op! I could really do some serious damage if I even tried. But, I bet there are people out there who lost the battle of wills and ate the junk on the commercial. And, that makes me so sad, and furious at the same time. I think I will stop watching tv, and switch to Netflix. There are no commercials on Netflix.

Take the opportunity to DO something when the commercials come on, get up, dance around, do dishes, feed the dogs, a quick (did I say quick? You have HOURS with commercials!!!) vacuum around the living room......the possibilities are endless! It's a good way to get a little exercise in, also! Drop and do a few push-ups, run around the house, (all of this AFTER you're cleared, of course!!!), pick up the hand weights....You get it!!!

I hate commercials - I much prefer netflix, or watching DVR'd shows so I can fast forward through them. Great job for finding a way to just get away from the siren's call!

@@CanyonBaby lol Not about to do push ups! I'm only 6 days post op and not allowed to lift 15 pounds. Pushing up 250 pounds is probably frowned upon too. But I do get my exercise in. Sometimes I just want to sit and watch a program.

Ha Ha! Not doing them, either, My upper back can't do them. I am relying on my crocheting to keep my mind off the commercials, gives me an opportunity to see the stitches I've missed, and check the pattern. I end up not even noticing when they are on, then, but still get to watch the program. With the weather I have, most of the year, I do watch a lot of tv, but am trying to do more while I watch, so I am a little more productive.

I love the food network but I can't watch it anymore. The last show I watched was the 10 best breakfasts in the U.S. and I thought I would combust with desire for a peach Dutch baby.

In the beginning I would turn the channel during commercials, that's was mostly in my pre op liquid diet, I'm three months out now, they don't bother me now.

I love those channels, too, but they made me so hungry! So I decided I can watch them ONLY when A. I am full. or B. while I am eating. That way I can still learn from them, but not be TEMPTED by them!

I am visiting my hometown next week. My brother and his sweetheart of a 2nd wife have been married a year but their cake was so good they ate it all instead of saving the top for their anniversary (and they are both buff!) . So they asked me to bring one out to them (they used to live here) to Celebrate. I am not tempted by too many sweets, but wedding cake is a different story. Went to pick it up this morning and the bakers place smelled so dang good!! Man! I hope that thing makes it to Illinois!

I'm the only one home when I watch these shows, so I get it all to myself!!!

BTW - I love wedding cake, also, so I stay FARRR away from it! Or ANY cake, for that matter! Luckily I'm the only one here who likes cake, so I never make it anymore! But once in a GREAT while, I will get a piece at a restaurant, ad it will last me many desserts!!!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
