Karlnjax 163 Posted April 29, 2015 Can anyone tell me this, is it nessasary for the hospital and doctor to place a drain line in for after surgery? Also do they have to do a catheter while you are staying in the hospital? Thank you!
MichelleTN 169 Posted April 29, 2015 I didn't have either but I've read where others have had drains in. I think it depends on the doctor.
Karlnjax 163 Posted April 30, 2015 Thank you! @MichelleTN I'll need to ask my doctor when I go back. I was just wondering how many here have had to have them? I'm not looking forward to it if thats the case.
Crosby 303 Posted April 30, 2015 I had both and neither were an issue. My surgeon however did stop using catheters a few weeks after my surgery.
Djmohr 6,965 Posted April 30, 2015 I had a drain but no catheter. In fact I got up immediately when I got to my room to use the bathroom. I was up and walking immediately. I did not even feel the drain when they took it out.
Hiedie 24 Posted April 30, 2015 I didn't have a drain, I did have a catheter they put in after I was put out and didn't feel anything when they removed it.

Also do they have to do a catheter while you are staying in the hospital? Thank you! I didn't have a drain but did have a catheter. I was actually sad when they took the catheter out cause I knew I'd need to move to go to the bathroom on my own. Thank god for the pain pump!
WildGrits 101 Posted May 1, 2015 I cannot remember if I had a cath or not. I went home with my drain and they removed it the following week. I hear that for my PS I will have a drain again. What a PITA that thing is.
SkinnyDown 409 Posted May 3, 2015 I had a drain for a previous surgery for about a week, and it didn't hurt coming out. I hate catheters, always happy when they are removed. I'm not sure if I'll have either a drain or catheter for my bypass, but I guess I'll find out when I wake up.
hellohealthy 32 Posted May 5, 2015 I had both. They took the catheter out the next day and my drain out before I came home. Neither were an issue for me.
