I had my gastric bypass three days ago and they fast tracked me out yesterday by noon. I'm not overly concerned about that part but I guess I'm looking for a little reassurance with the whole air in the abdomen thing. I have certainly tried to walk some of it off, gas x has not been helpful and it kept me up almost all night last night requiring liquid Vicodin which I had hoped to stay away from. It does feel somewhat better today and I am passing it at a very slow rate, but when does this let up? I'm a registered nurse and didn't expect a completely easy ride but guess I didn't expect this level of discomfort secondary to the air. It even radiates to my back. Any advice????

Jeff,

It took several days foe that to wane foe me. Now I deal with air pains because I apparently swallow more air than I ever imagined. I am now 8 daya post-op. We are all different in how this works for us. just know I feel your pain and it sucks!

I had my band removed in December and had the worst gas pain I have ever had from that. It radiated into my left shoulder for about 4 days. Fortunately it wasn't as bad with bypass (3 weeks ago) but even that lasted 3 days. I am sorry you are having bad gas pains. I know how much that hurts, and unfortunately the only thing that really worked for me was time.

JeffO I am going through the same. I had a gastric bypass on 25th April and I'm really struggling with gas. I can't belch for some reason and it's stopping me from drinking much or trying pureed food. I'm a registered nurse too so I'm concerned that I'm making things worse by not drinking enough. It takes me over 90 minutes just to manage the morning meds! How are you feeling today?

I had surgery the 28th. My gas is only in my abdomen, hasn't shifted anywhere else. It painful to me because of the pressure it puts on the incisions. the gas itself seems like horrible bloating. I can feel the gas move around as I walk, but can only muster up some teeny tiny burps from time to time. I did start passing gas last night, was very happy about that.

Luckily I have no issues drinking, but it is hard to tell when I'm full.

I'm feeling a little better this morning and moving some gas at this point. I also worry about taking in enough fluids, but it's next to impossible when you are bloated and that uncomfortable. I know we will all look back on this in the near future as a simple hurdle on our way to happier and healthier life, but right now it really sucks! : )

It took about 5/6 days for that gas to completely disappear. The only thing that worked for me was walking, gas x, Water and a heating pad was my best friend.

They gave me liquid Vicodin but it did not even touch the gas pain so I quit taking it 48 hours later. The only real pain I had was from the gas.

Heating pad really helped me a lot.

Good luck!

I will 2nd the heating pad thing. That and walking was the only relief for me.

It will pass, it will seem like forever before it does, but it will.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
