Aiynjel 0 Posted April 29, 2015 My name is Tonia. I am 36 years old and my surgery is happening at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio in about 6 hours. I would love to meet others like me and possibly a surgery buddy. I am getting a roux en y surgery due to GERD and reflux damage and because my esophageal muscle stopped working. Any ideas, suggestions or encouragement is appreciated. Thank you
Miss Mac 6,262 Posted April 29, 2015 Hi.....welcome to the forum. Opinions and tact will vary. i am glad to hear that we have another new bariatric sister on her way to healthy. Congratulations. I had my surgery here in Chicago with Br Bipan Chand. Loyola University stole him away from the Cleveland Clinic, but you and I both have benefited from his expertise He was instrumental in developing the bariatric surgical program there, and then here. So, you should be fine. I wish you good luck and good health. You are in good hands.

Aiynjel 0 Posted April 30, 2015 Unfortunately the surgery was canceled due to what the doctor said was excessive contact with second hand smoke due to a urinalysis that was done on the 20th of this month. I was never contacted about this being a problem prior to surgery and they allowed me to wake my family at 2 in the morning , drive almost 2 hours and then even get into the pre op room with my gown and hair net on before they came in after making me wait for over 4 hours to tell me that the surgery was canceled and had to be rescheduled. I did provide a new urine sample and then began to cry uncontrollably. Now I have sworn everyone I know that smokes away from me and I have locked myself in the house until I get a new date for my roux en y surgery. I feel as though I have failed. I have been smoke free for almost 2 years, this was devastating to me today.
wannaBthinsoon 1,634 Posted April 30, 2015 @@Aiynjel OMG! I am so sorry that happened to you! That is unacceptable that no one called you on the 20th to reschedule, instead of handling it the way they did. That is just horrible. I was really careful prior to surgery with the cigarettes. I quit a year before the surgery, and made my hubs quit too. I quit going to the casinos a year ago, to stay away from 2nd had smoke, as well. They really take that seriously! Hang in there, though. It is soooo worth it, and so are you.
Aiynjel 0 Posted April 30, 2015 It just frustrated me so much because my hubs and I quit smoking in 2013. I had spent the weekend prior to the day of testing at my dads house helping him and my grandmother as I lost my mother in 2014 to cancer. I never thought about the second hand smoke as my dad is a chain smoker because no one warned me about it or I would have been more careful. It is so frustrating and my insurance only approved the surgery to be performed within a certain time frame. Thank you for the kind words and support. I have always played by the rules so this really caught me off guard for sure.

ProudGrammy 8,322 Posted April 30, 2015 canceled due to excessive contact with second hand smoke @@Aiynjel i am sorry this happened to you the doc/hospital handled the situation terribly have you talked to doc about your future with surgery he understands you will always be around other smokers will he still agree to perform surgery eventually? if doc doesn't want to do surgery, fine if his mind is made up, so be it don't "beg" him to do surgery you don't want someone performing surgery if his heart is not "in" it dry your eyes you must go forward don't cry over spilled Protein shake you must seek out another dr don't throw in the towel call your insurance office immediately ask how the delay will effect your time period/approval exceptions be made due to cancellation ? quick research find another doc ASap unfortunately this will take time hopefully labs, approvals of psych etc could be transferred to new doc don't give up!!!! it will take longer to have surgery in the end it will be worth it stay strong i have never been a smoker but this situation doesn't sound fair GOOD LUCK kathy

Aiynjel 0 Posted April 30, 2015 The doctor that came in and spoke with me about the test results was NOT the surgeon that was to perform the procedure, he is a doctor that works with Dr. Kroh. It was explained to me that Dr. Kroh's secretary /nurse was going to call me yesterday within a few hours of the cancellation to reschedule and I have yet to hear from them even as today ticks on. I have left a few messages finding out what I need to do next and how I can prevent from having these results again, I AM PETRIFIED TO GO OUTSIDE!!!! for fear that I will be exposed again! I am so scared, worried, nervous and want to get this done. I know why the results came out the way they did and that was 10 days ago!!!! That nicotine is well out of my system as it was a weekend visit with my dad that caused the results to be positive. He smokes ALOT and has a very small house. I was also changing curtains and doing laundry along with other household chores as he takes care of my 94 year old grandma and he is 74 years old. I do not know what else to do then to stay in my home and keep everyone away from me that smokes.
