Pre-op diet and phentermine

Recommended Posts

I will start my preop diet on 2 days and is base in 800 calories.... I think is pretty insane that's why I wonder if I can be on phentermine for the 2 weeks prior my surgery.... My surgery is on May14th... I will call the doctor tomorrow I just need some kind of appetite suppressant while doing this Liquid Protein diet to shrink my liver

That is on my list of questions for my dr. I would imagine that it would make it easier to do!

My brother had surgery 2 years ago and his dr allowed him to take it to help get the weight off. He had to lose 50 lbs before they would do it though. Don't know if that played a role in their decision or not.

I had to stop all meds during pre op. But I didn't have to lose a certain amount of weight either, which may be the difference.

I don't have my consult until next Friday, May 8th. But I will post. I know all drs are different though. I just got back on it. And I have a ways to go before I'd be approved. I have the info session on Sat.

I will be interested to hear what your doctor says about taking it during your pre-op period.

Phentermine helped me to lost 50 lbs. several years ago. Even after losing that 50 lbs. I continued taking the drug. I switched PCPs a couple years ago and the first thing he had me do was to quite taking the phentermine because I had been on it too long and because of the risks of long term use. I managed to maintain the weight loss on my own. Because of these risks, it never occurred to me to ask about taking it during pre-op, probably because I wasn't required to lose weight before surgery aside from what weight is lost due to being on a liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery.

@@Kristomoto When I went to pre-op appt a couple weeks ago, my nurse was doing my EKG and asked if I had taken Phentermine before, I said yes, although it had been about 6 months ago. She said there are some Anesthesiologist that won't perform surgery if you've been on them right before surgery because a patient died on them. It caused her heartbeat to be irregular and put her in cardiac arrest. I was very glad I had stopped taking them. Just wanted to share, but all docs are different. I was amazed she knew from my EKG. That alarms me. It will always show up she said.

@Kristomoto The pre-op isn't as bad as your head is letting you think it is. The first couple days are rough and your body makes adjustments. By day 3 most of what you are feeling is head hunger. Drink lots of Water and warm tea. Warm liquids trick the brain into feeling fuller. Because pre-op diets vary so much between doctors I'm not sure if you are strictly on liquids/shakes or not. You can also ask your NUT or doctor's office if you get hungry if you can add another protien shake in. Usually, they are accomodating. The pre-op is not about losing weight but shrinking your liver, your body does this by going into ketosis so the biggest factors are no additional carbs and low fat. Believe, me after day 3 you will be surprised, just keep your eye on the prize.

@@Kristomoto Hang in there! You can do this! Just get past day 3, and it's smooth sailing...really. If WE could do it....YOU can do it. Remember...it's for your health. It is not to be mean, or meant to be a punishment. It is for your health, and to make sure your surgery goes well and without a hitch! Sending well wishes to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
