Am I losing enough weight?

Recommended Posts

My Bypass was on April 6th. Prior to surgery I lost 15lbs on the liquid diet, when I got out of hospital I weighed and, I guess due to Water & swelling, I weight exactly what I did before the liquid diet. Since that day I have lost 30lbs. (this includes the 15 prior to surgery).

So, basically, 3 weeks 15lbs... or 30lbs, however you look at it. It doesn't seem like enough! Thoughts?

Your body is still adjusting. I'm 6 weeks out and I've lost 30 lbs so to me it seems right. Check with your doctor at your follow up and be prepared for less weight loss weeks 3 and 4.

Everyone loses at different rates. Think about losing 30lbs! Have you ever done that so quickly before?

Remember that every pound you lose this time, it will remain gone forever if you follow the plan.

You also have to remember at about 3 weeks post op, your body starts to push back because it goes into starvation mode. If you follow the plan and continue the weight will continue to drop off.

Remember you did not gain it all in a month, it is going to take time to lose it. This time is different because those pounds will be gone forever.

You are doing great!!!

At this stage your body is in a recovery mode. So cast aside your fears at the moment.

I lost 15 the week before surgery and then 15 the week after surgery, then it went to like 2,3,1,5, ect. You are doing an awesome job. Try not to focus so much on the number that the scales say......it will drive you crazy!!

My doctor put it to me this way: Most people lose up to 20% of their intending weight loss by 6 weeks post op, up to 60% by 6 months out, and 80% at 1 year. That last 20% is what creeps off your 1 year surgiversary. Now mind you this calculating the amount your suppose to lose to get to your doctor's ideal weight for you.

I thought I was going slow too until I started doing the numbers. I've lost a third of my excess body weight by my 6 week and that made me feel better about not seeing big numbers at my appointment!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
