Edavidson 84 Posted April 29, 2015 Smokinjoe: You have really done well at 68 lbs. in two months. I hate to hear about the sick feeling when you eat. I don't know why some of us do so well and others stay so sick. I am 4 1/2 months post op and I stopped throwing up constantly about three weeks ago. But, now that I am eating more I have heart burn really bad. I taking BLERDgirl's advise and asking my Dr. for PPI. I really hope you feel better soon and the nausea goes away. At least you have lost a lot of weight. I have lost 81 lbs. since my surgery. I know I lost weight fast but now that I am feeling better I am happy about the weight loss. BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted April 29, 2015 I'm post opt two months and every time I eat I feel sick doc says to slow down while eating thirty minutes per meal its kind of hard doing when your only eating 4oz. I've learned to live with it.i probably eating less not to get that feeling ,Had my surgery March 2, 2015 and I'm down 68 LBS Throwing up frequently is not good for you. The bile coming back up can be as corrosive as the constant heartburn. At 2 mths I did indeed take 30 minutes to eat 4oz. It wasn't easy but I did it by only putting a teeny bit of food on the tip of my spoon or fork. Others have used baby utensils. Additionally I literally put my utensil down and waited a full minute between bites. Slowing down also allows your body time to signal brain that you are full. When you eat too fast this may not happen and in the long run you could end up overeating again. Some people have found it helpful to use the Eat Slower app.
Edavidson 84 Posted April 29, 2015 The one thing that I have learned through this wonderful website is that we are all different. What works for one may or may not work for the next person. I think that we all have to learn how to live with our new life the best way that we can. What has encouraged me the most is knowing that I am not alone with my symptoms after the surgery. At first I felt that I was alone but listening to others experiences I have found a way to balance my new way of eating and living. We are all becoming different people. Becoming smaller has had its pros and cons. I can't keep clothes on my back. I am so happy for everyone on this website and beyond for taking the first step to become a new and better person. KristenVSG2014 1,872 Posted April 29, 2015 I was told not to eat or drink anything that was too cold or too hot. I am 3 weeks out tomorrow and I am getting a feeling of a lump in my throat or a tightening that's uncomfortable..if I can then burp it seems to relieve it...this is after I eat. Is this normal? I was drinking hot tea the day after surgery and have continued starting and ending my day with a cup of hot tea. However, almost six months later cold beverages still make my sleeve cramp and seize up. It's the worst feeling!
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted April 29, 2015 @@Edavidson - I wouldn't wait. Either call your doctor and ask for a script or you can buy it over the counter. Prilosec or generic omeprazole.
Concerned05 3 Posted April 29, 2015 I love all the advice we get on her. I was on a week of liquids and then able to love to puréed foods as of Tuesday im on them for 2 weeks. I actually feel so much better today. I worked really hard yesterday to make a schedule of eating and what to eat. I think now why couldn't I do this years ago. But I tried 1/2 of egg (2oz) took Vitamins 30 mins later and now I just had 2oz of yougurt with Protein. Waiting 30 minutes and gonna drink a shake. I found through a lot of phone calls and a lot of Internet searching to teach your body to eat but stop when full and try something very small every two hours or so. Work on getting calories up to the 800 mark.
Edavidson 84 Posted April 29, 2015 BLERDgirl: does prilosec work better than zantac? if it does I will stop on my way home and pick some up. I suffer every day with the burning and hurting. I would take anything at this point. I can pick some up after work and get my Doctor to prescribe some for me so that my insurance can pick up the tab. Thank you so much for your advise. I promise to get some today
MrsSugarbabe 727 Posted April 29, 2015 For some immediate relief until you get your PPI, try Tums. I have had to chew a couple tablets a couple of times after eating either too much or too fast and ended up with heartburn. The Tums worked very quickly to give me relief. Sometimes one bite can be one bite too many and can make you feel miserable for about 30 minutes or so. Living and learning with our new tummies
Edavidson 84 Posted April 29, 2015 I know what you mean by the lump in your throat. I four months out and I still get it. It feels like something is lodged your throat, it was so bad night before last that I threw up. It is like you have to burp but it will not come out. I know that sounds gross but that is what it feels like. I wish there were long term studies regarding the effects of the sleeve. I know they have not been doing this type of surgery for that long. I have so many strange things that happen. Has anyone had to go back and have surgery again or have hernia's.
Edavidson 84 Posted April 29, 2015 I keep tums in my purse for emergencies. They do help...
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted April 29, 2015 Tums is decent temporary relief, but a good PPI is better. I don't know if Zantac is better than Prilosec. I know many poster have used both with success. My doctor prescribed omeprazole for the first 30 days post op. I had to increase it to 40 mgs but by month 5 I no longer needed any.
Edavidson 84 Posted April 29, 2015 I hope my heart burn goes away. I am feeling so much better than I was even a month ago. My only complaint is the heart burn. I will try the prilosec and see if it works better. Thank you again.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted April 29, 2015 You're welcome.! It may take a few days to kick in. I found I tended to get heartburn in the early evenings so I took mine around 2 -3ish. Once I increased to 40 mgs it worked like a charm. Start with the 20 mgs and work your way up.
RaginCajun 177 Posted April 29, 2015 My early experience (10 days post-op) is that if you eat slowly and chew rigorously before swallowing is the key. Be watchful for any situations where you speed up (to talk, or interact with others). That can cause premature swallowing when food is not chewed well enuf. Also, if you don't chew the food enuf, when you swallow there may be feeling of a lump in your throat/stomach. That happened to me with my first attempt to eat string cheese. I got a little cocky because it was cheese and soft, so I thought didn't have to chew lots. I was wrong One great approach I learned from a sleever on YouTube, when eating a 'new food' always take a bite and wait 10 mins or so to see how your body reacts. Even a few bites may be too late and result in extreme discomfort if your new tummy reacts badly. -RC-
