Did you have thin hair pre-vsg?

Recommended Posts

As we all know, hair loss is a part of having wls. But my hair is already super thin due to genetics combined with years of Hashimotos hypothyroidism. And when I say thin, I mean THIN! You can see my scalp kind of thin. It's really bad. So I am extremely concerned about being close to bald post surgery because I know I will lose more. I know the Protein and Vitamins help and to take Biotin and all that, but I just wanted to hear from any ladies who were in a similar situation to me. I'm afraid I'm gonna end up in a wig.

So ladies who had super thin hair pre-vsg, how bad did it get after surgery?

I had really thin hair before surgery. I was prepared for the thinning to commence. By the time the shedding stopped, it was pretty bad. It still is, but it is starting to grow back in now. Now much of it is really short, as in an inch long. I don't blow dry, curl, straighten or color it at all while it is in this fragile state. I bought a wig prior to surgery. I knew my hair would be awful. I've learned a ton about how to care for them and how to faux dye the lace front to make the part look even more natural. The brand I went with is Jon Reneau. It's lace front. It's been 7 months since I began wearing it and still looks great! Nobody has been able to tell that it is a wig at all! Find the one you want and the color, then go on ebay to purchase. It is so much cheaper. You are not alone. If you need tips or advice on wigs, don't hesitate to ask!

I had really thin hair prior to surgery, just bad genetics. I used Toppik and Nanogen before surgery so my scalp didn't show. By the way, if you are self-conscious about your scalp showing, those products are terrific and I really recommend them.

I lost enough hair after surgery that I had to get a bonded topper, which I guess is kind of like a toupee for women. I don't want to sound braggy, but it looks great, I get tons of compliments on my hair now, and no one can tell that some of my hair is mine because I bought it and only a smaller amount grew naturally out of my scalp!

I get my topper custom made to match my natural hair and get it re-set about every five weeks. Most big cities have a salon that specializes in this kind of product and hairstyling. My hair did grow back a little bit eventually, but I am sticking with my topper, I love it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
