Newly Banded in Canada

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, this is my first post so bare with me.

I am newly banded June 2nd/07:clap2: so far all is well and I am down 10lbs.

I didn't have time to get nervous or pine over my decision I went for a consultation on Monday May 28th and was banded on June 2, I didn't do any pre op dieting, but I did get the flu the day before surgery and thought I was going to have cancel but I was much better by the morning.

I paid for this on my own $15,000., has anyone had it covered by their insurance? I have submitted all the paper work and doctors recommendations to my insurance company but have not heard back as of today. I was just curious if anyone has gotten it cover by their insuance.

I was banded in Sarnia, Dr Elgamal and Dr Delegarza (from Mexico). Has any one else been banded in Sarnia? Not sure what to expect as far as the future goes, but hoping for a smaller me. I am still on the liquids right now (I did try a small piece of meat once and I paid for it, I think it got stuck, but being a food addict I just had to see if the band was going to work,) but I won't do that again. I have alot of family support but just would like to get other outlooks on how their band is working. I am glad there is a site like this to read about other people trials and tribulations.

Welcome to LBT and congratulations on your band....that is great....Two weeks out, I wouldn't be trying to eat any solids....stick to the liquid diet and please follow your doctors orders...you are in a healing stage right now and you don't want to do anything to mess up the healing of your band....Don't take chances with the band...I see you paid the $15,000.00 out of your own pocket, so did I...I want to make sure I don't mess this up...$15,000.00 is a lot of money and I don't want to ruin what I have had done...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
