Salads? Veggies? Fruit?

Recommended Posts

Hi all....

Need advice on salads/lettuce. Will I ever get to have salad again without feeling sick. Maybe I am rushing it...I am just under 12 weeks post-op. The dr. told me that I can go slow but I can try to eat what I can tolerate. I had missed salads and vegetables so much, I tried a salad. I didn't tolerate it all that well.

When does being able to eat salads/vegetables and even fruit come back?

Thanks

Its different for every person as to what they can tolerate. Some have problems with salad, certain fruits and veggies. Some dont have any problems. I can do salad , all fruits and most veggies, except raw broccoli which is a BIG no no. So just go slow and easy with new foods, and you might try new foods at home ( not work or a restaurant) so you can be near a bathroom if necessary. ( Broccoli. ......... it.wasnt. pretty.........)

Also, you might find that a food that didn't agree with you will suddenly be just fine a few weeks later. So don't give up on vegetables and fruits. Just give yourself some time and then try again.

Took me a while too. Maybe 4-6 months for most veggies and a little less for fruits. I still don't do well with raw broccoli either... Or raw cauliflower. Most of the rest I can tolerate fine. Sometimes pea pods are difficult but if I pull out the string thingie they are okay.

I love salads now and any vegetable I can get my hands on. I roast my vegetables or steam them. I used to pre band eat crisp tender but now I do a little more cooking on it. when I was very newly banded I would emulsify my asparagus and stuff. I began to enjoy vegetables just for their taste not so much their texture.

It's too long ago for me to remember timings but I am pretty sure I had problems with them early on. I remember trying to eat an apple while on a walk and having to sort of scrape the peel off with my teeth. But certainly after a while, all fruit and veg became a major part of my daily food again.

One thing I do know is that FOR ME soft fruits like banana, mango, melon are still ones which need care. This sounds odd but I think it is because they are soft and so it is harder to really chew them. Like scrambled egg which many find difficult.

It's so funny how one food is tolerated by one person and another couldn't eat it if offered a million bucks. I can't eat deli meats. I have tried as a quick Protein lunch and it makes me slime so bad. but I can eat all pasta's and rice and bread without a problem.(DARN)! I do stay away from them because of my diabetes. I also really shouldn't have beef in my diet unless its in chili or something like that. I can eat lamb without problem. It just amazes me how different we all are when it comes to food.

@@terrydumont46 Yes, it's crazy. I can actually eat all foods but I avoid lamb as unless it is incredibly tender, lamb is the one of the few foods i find can be difficult. I am too old a hand at this to get stuck but I often end up spitting it out (discreetly!!!) rather than swallowing.

You're rushing it !! Still too early, although my "Tastes" for foods, along with some "Cravings" began to change almost immediately after surgery, and continued to as I got my band adjustments.

I used to love salads, but now stay away from them. I simply lost my taste for them, plus they fill me up very fast. Cannot get through a small dinner salad....and then that will finish me with my entire meal before I get to the entree, which will be the Protein i seek.

I prefer to drink my vegetables...and /or I will snack on raw vegetables along with a dip while watching TV, etc.

I am seven months post op and just in the last 4 weeks I have finally been able to tolerate raw salad and all the veggies that go with it.

Prior to that salad was not a good experience for me. Now I cannot get enough of it.

I especially love to throw a scoop of cottage cheese on it for that extra Protein.

fruit I have been able to tolerate since the beginning. My nut had me eating raw fruit at 4 weeks out in very small amounts but peeled. I still cannot set an apple peel.

I'm 4 months out now and can eat any fruits and veggies that I want. The first few times that I tried salad though it made me really nauseous... I think I was about 6 weeks out maybe? I figured out it was the Romaine lettuce for some reason and tried Iceberg lettuce next time which I tolerated. After doing that for awhile I tried the Romaine again, and it was fine. Other veggies, I tried cooked first and if that went okay, I introduced raw... I never had any other problems.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
