TXMissy 211 Posted April 26, 2015 I am wondering because I am a devout Catholic, would it be ok to take communion at church tomorrow? Any advice would be appreciated.
AmyC65 34 Posted April 26, 2015 I don't know when your surgery was. I think your biggest issue would be the juice. But it's such a small sip, I think you would be fine.
NewJeffrey 84 Posted April 26, 2015 I took communion 4 weeks after my surgery. It wasn't until after I took it that I thought about the implications it could have. I immediately was scared. However I thought, my faith is what has carried me so far. I have taken this communion out of my gratitude for what Jesus Christ my Lord has done in my life. This surgery is one of the many things that I thank the Lord for. I've been taken communion since then and I have had no issues. Praise the Lord!!!!
TXMissy 211 Posted April 26, 2015 Sorry I left out that I am 1.5 weeks out. We use real wine, so I won't be taking that. Just don't want to risk anything. I have followed my diet so strictly thus far, when we were making plans to attend mass this morning my mom asked if I could take communion. I just looked at her and said I hadn't even thought about it. I'm thinking I am just going to play it safe and not take it. I would fewl horrible if it came back up or something. James Marusek 5,244 Posted April 26, 2015 I don't think you will have a problem. I would recommend that you not eat before Mass if you are worried about vomiting. After a few months it will be ok to even take communion in the form of a sip of wine. In my case I am a Eurcharistic Minister. Sometimes I gave the host and other time the wine. It is a custom that after distributing the wine, anything left over, I drank in order to empty the cup. I remember early after surgery, that one time I gave the cup and there was quite a bit left over, almost a half a cup. I turned to Father and asked him to drink it, and he did. And all was well. As time went on, this stopped becoming a problem.
DroppinLikeItsHot 52 Posted April 26, 2015 I had communion about 2 weeks out. I had the "juice" but not the bread. I took it (we grab some and go back to our chairs) and let my little one eat it (I'm Methodist - children can participate in communion). I was too afraid to try bread so soon. rufusdufus 0 Posted April 27, 2015 I have taken communion since surgery. Just keep the bread to soften in your mouth and a small sip. I was fine but was nervous about it afterwards. But no problems
TXMissy 211 Posted April 27, 2015 Thank you all. I did take the bread this morning. I will hold off on the wine for a few weeks. Everything went well, of course I prayed for it to go well all through mass.
cadladykim 55 Posted April 28, 2015 Not catholic (Lutheran) but I took communion (bread and wine) 2 weeks post op and every week since. Never had a problem or a hiccup. I asked my NUT before and she just said start slow and be mindful of how i felt. The first 4 weeks I just took a sip of the wine, I didn't drink the whole little cup. And I kept the bread in my mouth till it mostly dissolved or I just kept chewing it even after I sat down (we typically don't do wafers). I am 3 moths out and I don't even blink with either now. That is the only alcohol I have done and it is SUCH a small amount that it has no impact. And that is the only bread I have as well. I was afraid I would have to do the gluten free wafer - but I seem to tolerate the homemade bread okay. Again, they are such small amounts. Good Luck!
