Getting Enough Water

Recommended Posts

Thank you for yoir feed back but that is info I already knew. I don't let myself get thirsty I drink constantly. I know the symptoms of dehydration as I am a former athlete, Soldier and now an athletic coach. My curiosity is, is there an upper limit on the amount of Water we should consume daily? I on average drink around 100oz a day, but yesterday was closer to 200oz just under 2 gallons.

I use Mio or Crystal Light drops in my Water. I do drink with a straw. I spend 2 hours a day in the car. It is much easier to drink with a straw while driving. I have not had a problem with drinking from a straw.

I also love the Chick Fil A diet lemonade. I buy it by the gallon and Water it down. I don't drink nearly enough if I try to drink plain water.

KingMoose- I know there was a woman that drank a large amount of water as part of a radio station contest and she died from it. She drank 2 gallons in 3 hours.

So she drank a large amount in a short time, did not pee and was not exercising so was not sweating out some of it. So yes you can drink too much water but I don't know where the tipping point is.

As far as really drinking too much Water, I talked to my NUT he said there is no upper limit if you are exercising and sweating a lot drink as much as you need.

I heard about that, that was just stupid on everybody involved. When I was in the Army on training days it was not unusual for me to drink 6 or more gallons of Water a day, but, I was sweating my ass off in southern Georgia in the Summer. So heat and humidity play a big part of how much you should drink as well.

So today it was 95 degrees where I live. Before surgery when I was out in the heat I would chug Water, but, now I can only sip. But, still managed to down 1 1/2g of liquids today.

Soy silly question is we are supposed to get at least 64oz in a day is there a too much point?

I've read you should drink 1/2 to 1 ounce of water for every pound you weigh. If you live somewhere hot or are very active, aim for the upper end. Drinking too much water can dilute the sodium in your body which can cause problems like nausea, confusion, headaches etc. Low sodium (hyponatremia) can be very serious.

I read in my book that you also get water from food. like chicken is 60% water, but we are eating less and therefore need more fluids.

I am also having a terrible time getting enough fluids. I am taking meds that make me nauseated. Water makes it worse and flavored waters have not helped. Today even flat diet ginger ale caused vomiting. I really hate Gatorade, it tastes like flavored sweat to me. I like real lemonade or limeade with a little coconut sugar but can't do that all the time. It's a problem.

I had myself a little pity party today, woe is me, why can't I kck this damn disease, why am I in so much pain and how can Water make me sick? I gotta get back on the straight and narrow so I can continue to strive toward my goal. I've been eating too many calories for the past few days, I HATE to be hungry, but thus is the first time I overdid with naughty foods. Bleh? I need to shake it off!

I stopped drinking pretty much everything else. I drink Water first thing when I wake up. I drink coffee but not every day. I gave up soda and rarely drink fruit juices. I buy bottled water, keep it chilled and always have a bottle with me. If I'm not eating I'm sipping. When the bottle is empty, I fill it up and start again. My palette has changed since I quit sodas so I don't often grave something sweet. I'm allergic to artificial sweeteners and food dyes, so no enhancers for me. I go through 2 -3 20 or 24 ounce bottles a day.

If you DO want a little flavor, but no sweetener or colors, try using extracts (not the artificial ones). I like peppermint, lemon, orange, but there are also almond, rum, maple.....lots of flavors. I use a tootpick, dip it about an inch in the bottle, then swish it in the water bottle (with Water, of course!). A little goes a long ways, so be careful!

When I'm not getting my water down, I have mixed in about 1/2 cup pedialyte with a big glass of water

It seems to get me through with a bit of flavor and a little help with dehydration... Might ask the doc if that is ok for you. Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
