aprilsleeve 3 Posted April 24, 2015 I am struggling with the Protein Shakes and can't get them down. I am 4 days post op and feel very weak due to not getting any food. Is there something else out there that it could try for Protein? I've ordered the ProtiDiet but need something while waiting for that to come in.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted April 24, 2015 Do you like yogurt? Greek yogurt is pretty high in Protein. Have you talked to your nutritionist? She might have some suggestions. You can try pureeing Beans or cooked meat and thinning them down with broth. Spinach is also a good protein veg, as well as a good source of Iron, and it may help prevent Constipation. Add that to your puree.

The shakes made me gag. Post op my surgeon said just don't drink them if I'm that much difficulty. I know that my levels of protein were lower than normal for 3 weeks post op but then scrambled eggs and other good options opened up soon enough. Stevehud 1,790 Posted April 24, 2015 try iso pure ready-made drinks. they aren't shakes, you can get them at many health food places, Vitamin shoppe etc. they are like kool-aid, they can have an after-taste but the black tea with lemon especially is very easy to get down. i also recommend the Syntrax Nectars or naturals,
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted April 24, 2015 Another option is to try the unflavor Protein powder. I use Isopure naked and add it to my Soup with no change in flavor. I buy it at my local Vitamin Shoppe, but GNC sells it as well. You just have to dissolve the powder before adding it and don't add it while the Soup is over heat because it will clump. Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted April 24, 2015 Syntrax Nectar and Isopure have clear Protein (at 4 days out you are probably on clear liquids). Bone Broth has some protein, too.
Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted April 24, 2015 When you say you can't get them down, what do you mean? Are you taking teeny tiny sips (basically drips) or are you taking small swallows? Does it feel uncomfortable, or painful?
aprilsleeve 3 Posted April 24, 2015 When you say you can't get them down, what do you mean? Are you taking teeny tiny sips (basically drips) or are you taking small swallows? Does it feel uncomfortable, or painful? It just feels like it's backed up in my chest and squeezes and is uncomfortable. Maybe it's where they repaired the hiatal hernia? I'm just worried because I did the surgery with a BMI of 29 and I have lost 15 pounds in 4 days. I hope this was a healthy decision that I made. I'm beginning to get depressed and regret my decision. BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted April 24, 2015 @@aprilsleeve - That sounds like drinking too fast. Sip. Super tiny sips, super slow. This is fairly normal for just 4 days out. Was there a medical reason why you were sleeved with a BMI of 29?

I agree with @BLERDgirl. You are probably drinking too much, too fast. Try taking tinier sips.
Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted April 24, 2015 By the way, stay off the scale! It is my understanding (and how I am approaching it) is that the only things I need to be focusing on are: getting enough Fluid and Protein, walking, and breathing. Just focus on the basics and have faith that everything else will fall into place.

Was there a medical reason why you were sleeved with a BMI of 29? Yes, there were several medical reasons as to why I had it done. I had a hiatal hernia, high cholesterol, plus my mom is a diabetic and had gastric bypass 6 yrs ago. It was heading my direction anyway and I needed to do something before it was too late. But then again, I keep questioning myself whether or not I made the right decision. I also ask myself if it is dangerous to have the sleeve for someone with a lower BMI like mine? Not sure really what to think but all I can say is I'm missing eating out at restaurants right now.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted April 25, 2015 Please try not to be so down on yourself. It hasn't been a week yet. Once you get over this hurdle hopefully things will look up. I am 7mths out and I eat out quite frequently. The only thing that has changed is the amount that I eat. Hang in there! It gets easier.
