One week post op protein makes me sick

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I had my surgery a week ago today. At first it was hard to get in enough Protein but I figured it was because I was healing. For the last 2 days it makes me nauseous and heave when I try to drink it so I haven't been. I will call my surgeon in the morning but any tips? I can't sleep it's bugging me so much.

There are many different types of Protein shakes. The goal is to experiment until you find one that works for you.

For me, I drank "Muscle Milk Light - vanilla Creme" blended on a Ninja blender (single serving). I would blend in a banana, that would help improve the taste. I found that if you tried to hand mix a Protein shake from powder, that it would not provide the proper consistency, and the Protein Shake would taste bad. That is why I went to an electronic blender.

But everyones taste is different, so you need to find what works for you.

I had the same problem, even now it's hard for me to drink Protein Shakes. Makes me feel WAY too full!

I went to an un-flavored Protein and mixed it with broth. That helped a lot.

I just tried Isopure Protein Water and it wasn't too bad-I had the fruit punch. It was a little pricey but it was large and had 40 grams of protein so I had half the bottle per day. I was told Walmart has them for less-I bought mine at GNC for $5.49(but if you bought 3 you received 1 free). Good luck!

If you really can't stomach any shakes, ask your Dr if you can add yogurt to milk.

After my surgery I could never drink the Protein Shakes. I still can't. I am 11 weeks post op. Right after my surgery I barely drank Protein. I waited until I got to the puréed stage and I would eat cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, puréed Beans, and I even puréed certain meats. I just tried to get as much of those high protein foods in. Skim milk has like 9 grams per serving. I would try and drink milk as much as possible even though I hate it. I still don't get enough protein. I try but I can't only eat so much meat. I have actually began to hate meat. I want to become a vegetarian but I would never get any protein because I can't stand the shakes lol.

Have you tried any of the clear liquid Proteins like Isopure. I liked the ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates. Syntrax Nectar is also another you might try. Even on Clear Liquids my surgeon allowed the Protdiet chicken and Tomato Soups -- those saved me from all the sweets. Keep trying. It is so important for healing to get your Protein. I didn't try any of the Protein Shots but I know some folks have had success with them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
