Sleeping on your side right after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Now that I am home from that so convenient hospital bed and television mount I am not sure I can continue dozing on my back. Did anyone change to their old sleeping position right away?

I'm a stomach sleeper, so sleeping on my back was hard. As soon as I got home, I used a pillow between my legs and slept on my side/stomach the best I could. I think I was back to sleeping fully on my stomach about a week out.

I agree. I sleep on my stomach as well. I was sleeved last Tuesday by Thursday I was on my side with a pillow then gradually back to my stomach. As long as I moved slow, I found it comfortable.

I have always been a side sleeper. I slept on my side in the hospital right after I got to my room. No problems. I guess I was very lucky and my surgeon was very skilled. I did not suffer much pain at all.

I slept on my back with a wedge pillow and my usual pillow. Too painful to sleep on my side for the first couple of weeks!

I tried sleeping on my side which was great until i had to get myself out of bed and then I worried I was putting way too much strain on the incision sites...

I am 12 hours out and feel incredible amounts of gas pressure. I've walked numerous times and voided... I am not sure if Ik I'm the pain bc I was laying too flat on my back and causing pressure pain the the incision sites... I didn't want to take much for pain meds, but when I received the morphine it definitely helped but I think it's just masking the pain and i'll feel it juat as much again once it ia out of my system

After I had lap band I think I started sleeping on my side the same night. I'm normally a side or stomach sleeper. Yes it was a bit painful, but I cannot stay asleep on my back. For some reason I'll fall asleep, but wake up like 20 minutes later when I try to sleep on my back

Actually lying on my side isn't bad especially if a tuck a pillow under..,it's the struggle to get upright again.

@@KalelsWifey yes the gas was rough. I ended up with a nausea reaction after surgery and as painful as it was to have dry heaves it cleared the gas right out.

@@MissLiss

hospital bed was fine :)

it was narrow, so i really wasn't "pushed" over to my side

where i would hurt

i can only sleep on my right side

first two nights at home were terrible/miserable/uncomfortable

i also used a pillow between my legs to "try" and help the situation

done in vain, because i still hurt terribly

the third night the pain slowly got less and less each day :)

sweet dreams

good luck :)

kathy

It won't be long and you will be back to regular sleeping positions. Just have to have patience and let your body heal.

I was able to return to side sleeping about 7-8 days after surgery. I had lots of difficulty sleeping on my back especially with my CPAP nasal pillows. My mouth kept opening and thus defeating the machine. Also had to prop myself up with two pillows when on my back.

I slept on my side in the hospital with no problem. A little discomfort with moving around, but really not bad. I had some gas pain too, but walking and moving around in general like getting up from the bed helped a lot with that.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
