Did anyone struggle getting their liquids?

Recommended Posts

I am 25 hours post-op and am struggling with getting my liquids in. I've been sipping them out of a medicine cup and it hurts when I swallow. Did anyone else have this happen? I've only had about 4 oz. in the last 9 hours. I don't know what else to do. Is this normal?

When I was fresh out of surgery (72 hours) it was very difficult to take in fluids. Obviously, don't force it down, but stay with it. Eventually your stomach will heal up a little bit an you'll be abcontinue drinking. Don't stress. Look for obvious signs of dehydration if you don't think you are getting enough Fluid.

Keep it up! You're doing great :)

I couldn't even tolerate ice chips on day 2. They just made me spit up foam. By the third day I was able to take small sips and get down 2 Protein drinks and 2 bottles of Water. After the first week, I haven't had any problems at all... I drink almost like I did before surgery.

Yes, the day after surgery my throat and upper chest (like the top of my cleavage) was sore. I think it was from the breathing tube. I forced myself to drink and eat ice. It did not go away completely I am now 7 days post op but it is getting better.

Yes i was this way for 3.5 days after surgery, it started to get better. On the 4th day i had a barium swallow to confirm that everything was ok.. Went home the following day.

Wish you all the very best with your weight loss journey xox

11 days out of surgery and I can tell you that it gets easier every day. Same issues as you but doing well now. Just remember...sips not gulps as you move forward.

I am 6 days post-op and that was an issue for about 4 days. Felt like I had something in my throat I couldn't swallow part of the time and the other like something coming up. An ice pack on the front of my throat seemed to really help. The hospital staff did confirm that was from the intubation tube. Once that irritation went away things have gone much smoother.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
