Vomitting after a meal

Recommended Posts

Hi:

I am 3 months post-op and down 55 lbs from my highest weight. Lately, I seem to be vomitting pretty much everything I eat soon after finishing my meal. I count 35 chews per bite as a habit so I don't know why I am having trouble keeping the food down. I dont eat rice or breads or sugary items. Most of my meals are strictly Protein (mostly chicken) or Beans. Other than Protein shakes, bananas, milk, and apples, pretty much all other foods make me feel like regurgitating. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong???

I don't know, however, it sounds like this is a new problem. Maybe a stricture?

While we can give support and encouragement, you need to see your surgeon, sooner rather than later.

Since there are a few things you can tolerate I would STRONGLY suggest you have only these items to maintain your nutritional balance and mitigate the effects on your esophagus from all this regurgitation.

Good luck to you.

I went through a phase for a few months where for some reason everything I ate made me barf. With experimentation I realized that first, some foods my sleeve does not like...butter, sugar, milk fat, oil...and if any of my food is cooked in that it is pretty much an instant barf. Dry chicken makes me barf too, even if it is completely plain. I also found that I was eating too much, too fast. I am way further out than you and my issue didn't start until about a year after surgery. Now I am really careful to only eat the things that my stomach has approved of and I have tried to slow down a lot. I don't have the issue anywhere as often as I used to.

But...you have a doctor for a reason and your insurance should cover the visit? Why not let him know about it and see what he thinks? Can't hurt and you might feel better with the opinion of a professional.

I am a "puker" too...about the same amount of time out as you. What I've found is that when I've had a vomiting episode, sometimes it irritates my sleeve and I need to be very careful for a day or so--soft, blander foods--back to basics, so to speak. After that, I'm fine again. Give your stomach a rest and see if that improves things!

I'm a puker too.....never vomited before the surgery even with the worst stomach bugs. Now it's several times a week. After a panic thinking I had a stricture and 30 minutes on the phone with my doctor I was told it's because I have a very small sleeve. I've also found that I do not tolerate BBQ seasoning in any way shape or form. Or sausage. Also that if I'm eating anything that is not Mushy or puréed then I need to take a Gas X about 3 bites in. But mostly I just stick to Protein Shakes, yogurt, cheese sticks, and Greek yogurt ice cream bars. Then one or two bites of whatever my husband is eating.

I've noticed that when I eat I feel like I'm going to throw up. It's like I'm full and can't take anymore so it makes me feel like I need to empty my stomach or something. My stomach hurts sometimes after eating certain things. I've also lost about 55lbs. Good luck and I hope you et it figured out soon.

Try stopping one or two bite sooner. One thing I found is that one or two extra bites makes all the difference in the world. So at the very hint of fullness I stop eating. If I push those last 2 bites I get a horribly uncomfortable belly ache. It can even feel like I am going to bring the food up. Once I learned to leave those last few bites, I was fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
