Plain water hurts my stomach...

Recommended Posts

UGH. At any temperature. Plain Water absolutely sends my stomach into a knot and is so uncomfortable. I don't get it. Protein is fine, Crystal Light is Fine, Tea is Fine. Water? I am not fine. I'm making myself continue to drink it because (forgive me for this, TMI) my urine is terribly dark and I'm having a hard time using the bathroom on my own. I know part of that is because I'm not getting enough water in.

Is this anything anybody else has experienced and did it ever go away? I LOVE water. Everybody knows my desk at work because it's always got a water jug and empty water gallon jugs around. I'm the Hydration Station. Now me and water just simply don't get along :-\

Until Water tastes good to you again, drink crystal light or anything that is liquid to get your fluids in. Dark urine means you are dehydrated and that is not good. Drink drink drink!! lol

Someone said the tightness of the Water molecules makes it harder to swallow. Additives may break this tension. I have no idea if it is true but it sounded sensible to my non scientific mind.

Don't you find it amusing (I am not sure if that is the correct word, frustrating maybe) how everything changes after surgery? What tastes good, what we can tolerate, what goes down well, etc. I will echo the above posts and say don't worry about crystal light, Decaf tea, etc. right now, just get the fluids in. Keep going back and testing Water. I know immediately after surgery, everyone advised it needed to be at room temp so not to shock your healing and sensitive pouch. Now that I am 11 weeks out, room temp Water makes me nauseous. I have to drink mine either hot (as in tea) or ice cold. Sometimes if I forget the new me and drink too fast, it will hurt. However, normally it does just fine. I would just get in your fluids any way possible and test water once a week until you get to the point you can tolerate it plain. Good luck!

I drink tons of Fluid but very little of it is plain Water. I'm drinking Protein, iced tea, crystal light and similar zero cal drinks and diluted Vitamin water. I know those things will all keep me hydrated, but I also know nothing's better than clean fresh plain water :-/ thanks for all the tips. Glad to know its not just me.

Blashlee.., is your tea Decaf? ?? If not it needs to be .,, I am 3 weeks out and I can not drink Water either, the surgeon says this happens to many people and they really don't know why,,,,, it smells like chemicals to me and taste the same way and then when it hits my pouch it feels very Heaney and hurts my pouch.

Yes everything is Decaf. I even have to skip some crystal light flavors because they're not decaf.

The Water drinking problem improves if I drink Water AFTER something else. So basically now plain water on an empty stomach is the problem.

I was so glad to see this thread. I thought something was wrong with me! I cannot drink room temperature Water. It has to be iced or absolutely hot. I also find I can no longer have crystal light or the like. I drink a lot of tea. Probably not good but, I feel kind of helpless with my pouch and what makes me sick.

It's gotten so much better. What helps is if I drink something else watered down and keep adding Water to it until it eventually is just plain water. As long as it's not first thing in the morning or on a totally empty stomach it goes down ok. Today my mom and my boyfriend noticed I was drinking faster than I have been without looking uncomfortable after. Thank the heavens. Cuz I loooove crisp fresh water.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
