What helped you through pre/post op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to gather up as much extra information as I can because there's a possibility that I could have my VSG earlier than the estimated early August so don't hold back!

1] How long did your Dr ask you to be on the pre op liquid diet? I've seen/heard varying times between 2 weeks and a mere 3 days.

2] What were some of the foods that you swore by?

3] How did you maintain your sanity?

What about post op? Was there anything in particular that helped you get by more than something else?

I'm finishing up day three of my pre-op low carb diet and loving it! The first two days where tough but today was easy with planning. If you can stock up on sugar free Jello, it's keeping my sweet tooth at bay and helping me stay sane.

Pre-op: 2 weeks (to shrink the liver)

Sugar- free popsicles....TONS of them!! They help with the crunch/chew thing you NEED to have!

Supportive husband was and is an essential for me....kept me on track. Keeping my eye on the prize, knowing this was finally an answer to my prayers. ALOT of prayers! Good luck to you!

I had a two week pre-op diet that consisted of 3 Protein shakes per day and one green salad with calorie-free dressing. I was also allowed sugar-free Jello and popsicles as Snacks. I honestly didn't bother with the Jello or popsicles. My body figured out pretty quickly that they didn't have any calories, so they didn't satisfy my hunger. If anything, they made me hungrier.

Things that got me through.... I stopped exercising the second week. I just had NO energy and trying to keep up with exercising was killing me. The other thing I did was go to bed SUPER early and just sleep a lot. Can't eat when you're asleep!

Post-op, the main thing I would recommend is not to over-prepare. Protein Shakes and things you think you like pre-op may not be as appealing post-op, because your tastes can change. I ended up with a whole bunch of Protein powders I never used. Plus, you'll be up and about pretty quickly and shopping is a good way to get some walking in. So shopping for what you need AFTER surgery can be a good excuse to get out of the house and do something.

Once I was on my soft-food stage, I used my food scale and some 2 oz. plastic containers I bought a LOT. So I highly recommend those. Here are the containers I used. They were perfect!

Thank you for the information ^_^. I've definitely seen several people mention not stocking up for post op so I will absolutely remember that. Those little storage cups are a great idea.

Those little storage cups are a great idea.

The are the perfect size, since you are only supposed to start off with 2 oz. of soft foods/purees when you get to that stage. I bought big tubs of reduced fat cottage cheese and portioned them out into those containers so I could just grab them out of the fridge. Also worked great for tuna once I was allowed to have it, though I could NOT finish two whole ounces of tuna at the start.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
