Gas after eating, post op LB day 4

Recommended Posts

So I was LB'ed last Thurs, 4/16, and today is day 4 post op.

I'm on full liquids and have noticed if I drink a Protein Drink or like today Greek yogurt (yes it's allowed) 4oz I develop very loud belly rumbles about 30 min later, then eventually pass the gas and then it's about time for my next meal! These are not painful but would be embarrassing at work or in public!

Will this settle down or should I plan on gas x with each meal?? I ate these same foods before surgery....

Get used to it. It's here to stay.

@parrishel do you take an anti-gas med for it regularly?

Not necessarily here to stay! I rarely get gas problems, only if I eat the "wrong" things, like anyone, banded or not. Our digestive systems are unchanged.

But in th post-op phase, I had lots of gas. It passes! Literally! Just keep taking the meds and keep moving.

Hi there, I don't have gas now but I sure did -- championship farting in my case. There's a lot of settling down that needs to happen post-op. I had to address Constipation around day four or five -- was not prepared for that. And I didn't even do pain meds, but still. As far as full liquids, I still have trouble with shakes. Might be a temperature thing in my case. And I'm not tight -- I glug liquids in general, etc. You will find what works well for your body -- there's a lot of listening you're doing and you're doing great. Best wishes! Keep all those appointments : )

I eat all kinds of food. Probably more veggies than I did pre op. Gas every day. Not horrible or anything, but the stomach rumbling is definitely loud.

Thanks KateP, Bandista and JustWatchMe! I think I'll hold on the gas x, at least while home, so I can see if it's dissipating over the next few weeks. It doesn't hurt and seems to pass quickly.

So far so good...other then a pulled ab muscle I feel good and no hunger. Down 1.5 lbs from pre-op weight. This will slow as I add foods but it's nice to see :))

Nope. I just fart a lot. And I tell my family "it's medically necessary."

I will take Mylanta if I have to be around non-family members (or if it gets really bad at work).

I never had this issue prior to being banded. I believe it comes from the slower passage of the food, which gives it time to ferment.

It's a French thing ; )

Whoops, Excuse Me. Oh my goodness.

I still have occasional times when I have gas like I never had before, but it is increasingly rare in my case (probably because I'm not having the major veggies I used to eat). In the beginning it was sort of amazing. My son and husband were impressed and unable to compete.

I definitely have to watch my digestion carefully now, but I sort of always did -- I just ameliorated then with those giant salads or big bowls of beets with olive oil and garlic. A way of eating I don't have now. Now I have Chia seeds, which work well for me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
