Delayed surgery date rant

Recommended Posts

So I've finished all my prerequisites for federal BCBS and all paperwork was approved. The last step was a sleep study, I thought no problem I don't have sleep apnea. My husband told me I snored by I have severe allergies and thought it was attributed to that. So sleep lab calls and says I have very mild apnea. Has anyone ever heard of "very mild apnea?" So I am now being required to start a 3-4 week cpap compliance before I'm even given a surgery date. Uggggh so frustrating, wouldn't losing the weight eliminate the need for cpap in the first place?? Has anyone ever had this type of ridiculous delay??

no but I do agree that WLS will help eliminate or reduce the sleep apnea. I have Fed BCBS and got pretty quick response for surgical approval. I have other commordities so I think it sped it thru. good luck!

Yes there are people on here who have had to do CPAP before getting their surgery date. It's not uncommon at all. If it is indeed weight related, chances are you will no longer need it as you lose weight. Please try not to be frustrated. Your surgeon is doing a good thing. No one wants to run the risk that you stop breathing during surgery.

I had a very mild case of sleep apnea so I had to get a cpap machine. I used it and after a couple months I didn't need it anymore

thanks everyone, I'm just a little frustrated with how it seems as if I'm nearing the finish line just to be sent back to the midpoint. I'm want to start my journey and not just keep sitting on the sideline. I met a young lady at my initial consultation 6 months ago, I recently went in to have labs drawn and she's already 3 months post op. We have the same insurance as well, I know our cases are very different but it's just a little disheartening to see where I could've been by now without all the delays...

I am sure it's mostly for your safety. I think I've read that people with sleep apnea are more at risk during anesthesia so while frustrating, it probably has something to do with keeping you safe.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
