Recommended Posts

I was wondering if you can harm your band if you drink too fast

?

Is there a reason why we can not drink and eat inthe same time ? does anyone ? what happens if you do

I don't know about drinking too fast. I can drink Water just like I did before surgery. I wish someone would answer that one. The drinking while eating is the liquid washes to food down and you don't get the feeling of being full. That was the hardest for me not to do.

I've never heard that you can harm your band by drinking too much/too fast. I think if it was a real problem, it would be posted all over the boards.

LLSibley gave the reasons you are not supposed to eat while drinking. For most people it washes the food from the pouch and you don't feel full long enough.

I don't know if it is like this for a lot of other people, but I personally am UNABLE to drink while I eat. If I do, I almost always spit up. So no drinks with meals for me, which I guess is a good thing.

I just got my first fill on Wednesday in Tijuana. Dr. Romero told me that the reason we shouldn't drink while we eat is that because the food only goes through the band so fast it can cause the Water to go through slowly also. If we are drinking alot, it can cause the stomach above the band to stretch and the band to slip down.

The band makes your stomach into a funnel. If you drink too fast, you over fill the funnel, backing up Water into your esophagus. Assuming the Water can flow, it will drain out. You can stretch the pouch for just a few moments.

For me, drinking while I eat = PB BAAAAAAD pb. Accidentally did it today. I'm two years with a band and still messed it up.

Also, as others said, drinking while eating washes the pouch, but for me, more than that, it's a bad combo.

A big ditto! If I eat solids and drink it's an instant PB.

I have been wondering the same thing. I have been very very careful with portion sizes but didn't even think about drinking too quickly. I'm almost completely filled and don't feel restriction. Going to see my doc. this week and find out.

Cool forum! Just found it tonight!

I had surgery about 2 months ago, have lost 30 pounds so far (out of 100, 70 more to go) and by far the hardest thing at this point for me is not drinking while eating.

The thing is, it's sort of a double edged sword for me. Many times if I don't chew well enough, the food gets stuck, and instead of waiting it out, or trying to bring it back out, I'll try and force it down with liquid. I know this completely defeats the purpose, as that food won't make me feel full, but I just hate that pain of the food being stuck. Other times though, the liquid doesn't help to force it down, and then I have to RUN to the bathroom and puke my brains out like after an old night binge drinking party ;)

I'm trying to get better about it every day, but for me it's for sure the hardest thing. My father got his band a little over 3 years ago, and to this day he says that's the hardest thing for him as well. Not to drink while eating. I can't wait for my next fill though (have had two already) at which point I know that no amount of liquids will help force food down, so I'll have to learn the hard way.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
