"You do not need to lose anymore weight"

Recommended Posts

I am so tired of hearing that. I feel that people are saying that because they were so use to me being 268 lbs. now that I am 166. It is a total transformation. My family thinks that I work out to much. I try to explain to them that exercise and my new love of running is relaxing for me. Today, I ran 3.1 miles and I ran 14 min 20 sec miles. Never in my wildest dreams would I see myself running and running 14 min miles.

Has anyone been hearing that they have lost enough weight?

YES! My mom recently told me I was too skinny. My therapist gently reminded me to pay attention to where these comments are coming from. In my case, usually other women that might feel threatened that my role in the friendship or familial relationship has changed; i.e. I was always overweight and they were always smaller or "better" than I was. Now that I am smaller than my mom (she's never been overweight but she's now a size 10/12 and I'm a 6/8), she feels that the balance in that part of our relationship has changed.

I try not to internalize it. I don't care what anyone says, I'm a size 8 down from a 32/34 and I feel fantastic! I simply tell people I will stop losing when my surgeon tells me to. After all, they know the post-bariatric body better than anyone.

i've just started hearing these comments this month. I'm not sure what to think of it because I still see the fat. So they will ask me if i'm done losing weight yet and i'll say no, i want to lose about 25-30 more lbs. You would think I just said I want to light myself on fire. They say oh you are gonna blow away! and theres nothing left of you! you are gonna whither away to nothing! are they for real? never ever heard this stuff everrrrr and I can promise there is still a ton of fat on me. lol

When.my husband lost over 100 pounds 9 years ago with the RNY, he was hearing those comments all the time. When he mentioned to his surgeon that people were telling him he was "too skinny", his surgeon just said:

"There are so many overweight and obese people these days, nobody even knows what a normal weight is supposed to look like anymore."

Made sense to me.

I haven't even had my surgery and I already get the "you look fine" SERIOUSLY!? You must be blind. The person most against my decision is the most overweight person in my family. So definitely consider the source. People get envious/threatened easily! Good for you and your new way of life! Congrats! :-D

Most people are uncomfortable with change. Since I actually am thinner now than I have been since junior high, I understand that people are not used to the new me and will take some time to get comfortable with the change. I'm just hoping to maintain long enough that my friends and family will think the thin version is the real version of me.

I agree that no one know what normal looks like anymore. You could ask the next nosy person: "Compared to who?"

I've heard some awful things from people including "Are you done losing now". But over the course of this journey I've learned that people say dumb things, they generally mean well, but the comments are dumb/mean all the same. I've also learned that the comment generally has everything to do with how they feel about themselves and nothing to do with me.

Try to let it roll right off, and remember the comments should just remind you how proud you should be of yourself!

Congrats on your success!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
