Little medical emergency

Recommended Posts

I am currently on vacation in the tropics...a small group tour. Sunday I woke up with a broken blood vessel in my eye for no apparent reason. We were traveling to a very remote destination that day and since I had been feeling a bit dizzy and other minor "not well" symptoms I decided to be seen at urgent care before heading to this remote ranch resort.

Holy smokes..my blood pressure was 171 over 103! My normal is 120 over about 70!!! Doc said the symptoms were a result of very high blood pressure probably caused by heat, but who knows.

When i was obese I had high blood pressure and took meds but nothing like that!

Anyway I am on temporary meds and hotel medic reports me 100 percent normal now but I am to be monitored. .especially to have it checked before the long flight home.

I find it odd that as one of the fittest of our little group that I should have this happen. Makes me wonder if my obesity history makes me prone?

@@CowgirlJane Oh my! take it slow and easy. I can only imagine what damage our obesity has caused. Probably just a fluke, but glad you had it checked out.

I'm so glad you got it checked out and got some meds for it. It's good they are keeping an eye on you.

Take care, and try to enjoy the rest of your holiday

What a pain for something like that to happen on vacation, but I'm glad you're starting to feel better!! I do tend to wonder if prior obesity has some role in hypertension. Just last week I called my doctor and asked for the beta blocker I was on before surgery because the last few months I had been really watching to see if my hypertension had been resolved by weight loss. Turns out it wasn't- I am now completely healthy, active, and thin and I still have hypertension. Both my parents and my sister have hypertension, so I tend to think at least part of it is genetic, but it is frustrating to have finally lost the weight and find out you still have an issue with high blood pressure.

Hope you continue to feel better!

@CowgirlJane. Sorry you had this happen, especially on vacation. Who knows about that hypertension- lets just hope its from the heat!! I would think that since you have been a normal weight for the last few years that your chance of developing hypertension would be about the same as if you had never been overweight. Take care of yourself. Hope the rest of your trip is fun filled and uneventful health wise. Keep us posted.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
