Is it possible to keep VSG a secret?

Recommended Posts

I'm not telling any of my family or friends about my surgery. My husband does know. At first he didn't think the surgery was necessary, but as time went on and I explained how my life has been effected, he realized just how depressed I've been and is now supportive of my decision.

The reason I'm not telling my family is that they are VERY judgmental. I have always been kind of the outcast and I don't want this to be another reason for them to set me apart even further.

I am just wondering what to say to people when they start noticing the rapid weight loss. I am not an attention-seeker, and I am dreading all the questions I'm going to get when I walk into a room.

I have started to tell some of them that I've been on a diet and walking, but will that be enough?!!

Yep. I just tell people, "I'm eating a lot less along with healthier options." Then I change the subject or walk away. Simple!

If you don't want to share this, it's your choice. It's okay to have boundaries. They protect.

Yup, I tell no one. My husband and kids know. People comment on my weight loss and ask how I'm doing it. They see that I work out every noon hour and note that I have really changed What I eat. I tell them I track everything food and exercise plus I do not eat anything with more than 5 gems of sugar and keep my carbs low. Plus that I try to eat whole foods and very limited process foods. All of which is true!????

The weight loss is not freakishly rapid. Some people might have suspicions but it's not that obvious and it's no one's business. Don't worry, just smile and say thanks when the compliments come. :)

It can be done! I am 7 months out. Only 4 people were told. Nobody else knows. They just know that I am making better choices with what I eat and exercise 5 days a week.

Yes, it's possible to keep it a secret, but I like to share a good thing and possibly save the life of a friend, a co-worker, or maybe a stranger or two.

Best of luck to everyone!

My whole family knows and all my in-laws know, but I haven't told many coworkers or friends (just two total). I've lost significant amounts of weight "on my own" in the past, so most people just assume I'm doing that again. By the time they realize I'm not regaining this time around, it'll be too late for them to comment.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
