How many of you have terrible acid reflux? When did it first develop? Have you figured out a way to control it? What does your dr. say about it?

I've had terrible acid since the first of the year. I just passed my bandiversary May 1st. I've lost a bit over 80 lbs. and other than the acid, feel great. I've never had acid before, so it's terribly annoying. I have little restriction and I'm still slowly losing, so I don't want the band removed. I've tried acid reducers, but for some reason it gives me a UTI every time I'm on it for a while. Doesn't make sense.....maybe it's just coincidence? Rolaids control it most days and I really have to watch what and WHEN I eat at night.

How are you handling it?

I have trouble too. I did however have some trouble before banding. I make sure I do not eat late before bed or eat too much. That really gets me going. I take something before I eat dinner at night. I also take a prilosec otc in the morning. I get break through reflux in the evening. It is miserable but I live with it as best I can. I also try to sleep with a bit of an incline.

I have lost 50+ lbs. I know it has been slow but I am still thrilled with my results. I know if I had excercised more my lose would be better.

I would like to lose another 50 and then I would be under my original goal. I will keep at it and the day will come.

I had never had trouble til about 6-8 mo after banding....now it's acid reflux and ulcer-feeling pain. I finally had a EGD last week and they said I don't have an ulcer but my band is too tight and is causing the food to back up into the esophagus and cause irritation. Dr said Protonix is probably the best med you can use. I also was ordered to cut out my arthritis meds because they certainly irritate my pouch. I'm also now using Folger's Smooth (low acid) coffee. I'm getting a a slight unfill next week and hope to get some relief.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
