What was your prescribed diet post-op day 5?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering because after being on a 3 week strict Optifast liquid diet pre-op and now liquid diet (only broth, Optifast shake, sugar free Jello and water/sugar free non-carbonated drinks) I'm having a tough time. Doesn't help (psychologically anyway) that I did the "light" optifast plan before the pre-op diet..so so many days with out much real food.

I'm curious how many went to full liquid or pureeds 1 wk post op.

Alot of people went to purees right away based on their surgeon's directives, but you should always follow your surgeon's directives.

It's likely your head hunger is trying to win the war again. Hang in there and you'll get through the liquids and be on purees.

Best of luck to you!

Morning.

Post-op

Week 1-2 : Full liquids only

Week 3-6: Soft mushy type foods

Week 7-on: Can start any type of foods except no nuts, seeds, or hard veggies/fruit.

6monts-on: Nuts, Seeds, hard veggies and fruits

when starting a new food, try very little because your new stomach may or may not like what you eat now.

Try all different new ones too. I love asparagus, califlower, broccali, etc........

One helpful hint that I read - which makes so much sense - is that when ever you add a new food, take one bite and wait 10 mins. That will allow you to see how your stomach reacts. Better than eating away only to have probs once you take several bites.

Thats my plan as I start to add foods along the way.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
