Weight gain during 6mtg pre op diet

Recommended Posts

This may or may not be a stupid question but during my 6mth pre op diet can my weight fluctuate? I weighed 272 at my initial visit I'm 5'8" that puts my BMI at 41.3 today was my 2nd mth visit I've gained 11lbs! They have me so stressed about not going under a 40 BMI that I'm gaining weight like crazy. So Dr is saying just don't go under the 40 BMI which will put my weight right at 263, so it's ok to go up and down right? But I should weigh less than my initial visit?

Since I really don't know the particulars of your situation, I would suggest you make sure you wear the same thing EVERY time you go in. Even shoes. And try to go a the same time every time you go there, eat the same, drink the same.....so you really have an accurate reading. And start taking measurements NOW, so you can show loss, even though the scales don't. Measure arms, neck, chest, waist, hip, thighs, and calves (anything else, anyone?!). Good luck to you on your journey!

I was told the same thing about gaining weight when I started. My BMI was 40.5 and I was told don't go below 40. Between that and quitting smoking I put on 17 lbs. My surgery was approved by insurance in 6 days. My date is May 21st. I've lost 10 lbs since surgery was approved, things are getting real now. I plan to lose another 10 before surgery.

@@pops24 Congrats on quitting smoking! And good luck on the surgery. Yea it's stressful when for the first time in my life I'm kind of being discouraged from weight loss, messes with my head a bit.

Thanks, I can't wait for surgery, my doc is taking two weeks off in May that's why so long, I was hoping for the first week but I've been waiting 8 months so I'll manage. I don't think your weight fluctuating is terrible as long as it's not a steady increase. I found out about a month and a half ago that because I have sleep apnea my BMI could go as low as 35 and I'd still get approved. I agree with you that hearing from the doc "don't lose any weight" gets in your head...almost like a free pass to continue with what brought you to them in the first place. Good luck to you, the six months really does fly by.

I'm in the same boat. I was 278 at start, and I'm 5'9 so my BMI was 41.1. I'm have my last monthly weight loss apt in the the 6 month supervised weight loss required by my insurance this month and am sitting at 270-271. I'm trying to stay above a BMI of 40 for my insurance requirements and had lost more, but freaked out that my BMI was below 40 (hit 267), and have gained some since then. Seems counterproductive to not lose as much as I possibly can in the 6 months, but I don't want to get denied by my insurance co.!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
