Hi everyone! I am just beginning my journey. I had my first appointment yesterday! A month ago I started trying to lose some weight on my own because I know that the heavier you are the riskier the surgery is. I currently have a BMI of 60 and the doctor told me I am on the borderline of being too heavy for surgery. This sucks! I definitely don't want to have any delays in this process. I'm so ready for a fresh start and a new, healthier life! One problem I have been having is Water retention. Oh my goodness. Why, why, why must we retain Water? !?! As of yesterday I am 4 pounds heavier than I was a month ago when I first started trying to lose weight! I have been using Weight Watchers, have cut back on my salt intake. What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have any s uggestions on how to conquer this water retention issue? It is so discouraging to work so hard on changing my eating habits and nothing shows for it. :( Any suggestions and words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

@@Jennifer2322 That stinks! My suggestion would be to read labels and log your food religiously - I know I often was eating more calories than I realized. For Water retention, can you ask your doc for 'water pills' (I forget the name of them...)? Hang in there, don't give up! Keep trying and you'll get there!

Do your research on doctors. Check out having a Duodenal Switch. Ask questions...are they experienced in this field? How many have they performed....etc. This is for the more morbidly obese patients and has had great success. There is others that have as high BMI as you. It is a greater risk but staying at that high of BMI is a great risk also. On the other website (ObesityHelp.com) there is a forum for BMI over 50. They may can help answer the questions you have. Don't give up. It took me years but I finally had the surgery last year and I feel great!

Drink drink drink! I know it sounds counter productive, if you're retaining Water why would you want to drink more? But it will start to flush!

@@startingnew I have been watching My 600 lb Life all the time lately to learn more about the surgery and see how it changes people's lives. My current weight is 396 lb. The doctor said if I gained anymore weight they would have to postpone surgery until I lost some. I live in Missouri. :-)

@@Jennifer2322 I weigh 331.5 I honestly have never heard of to big I read all these postings and watch you tube all the time I have seen people much heavier than us and have never heard a one talk about too heavy. What I did was go on a liquid diet for two weeks because I gained 5lbs in 6months and part of my ins. Must do's is not gain a pound so I had Premier Protein for two of my meals and I found some low sodium broth chicken flavor added the Water to it and dropped two eggs and let it come to a boil I ate that for lunch and I piggd out on sugar free Popsicles and drank crystal light all day and in 6days I lost 12pounds. Talk to your nutritionist ask her to design a liquid diet for you to drop a few pounds... so your doc will back off it will also give you a test in seeing how ready you are for the surgery.. at least it is what I told myself. You can also try low low Carb high Protein that will be a way of life after surgery☺

I also am just starting my journey and had my first doctors visit today. My Bmi is 66 since I am only 5"2 and I weigh 363. My doctor said nothing About being to heavy for surgery but he did say I have to loose 10 percent of my body weight before surgery which is 36 pounds.

On the Water weight, my doctor uses a scale that tells them my body fat separate from my Water weight so I can sometimes gain weight but lose fat. It is SUCH a relief to know the water going up and down won't affect my progress and I can see reward for my hard work.

They didn't say anything to me about being too heavy for the surgery (BMI 62.4) but they are asking me to lose some weight as a sign of progress toward eating right after surgery. It is very difficult but I am making good progress (only two cheats this month compared to five last month by this time.) My goal is to have a whole month of on-target eating and then see if they will schedule the surgery.

Good luck!

My date is April 23rd. Is anyone having a hard time with this liquid diet? I have been drinking Unjury, Isopure, different kinds of shakes and I am tired of everything already. I just started yesterday and I cheated today. It wasn't really bad but I had hard boiled egg whites and a small piece of boneless skinless chicken. Any suggestion??

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
