Contact sports after getting a sleeve

Recommended Posts

I play roller derby a very high contact sport and will be having surgery on april 29/15. I really want to get back on my skates but does anyone have any suggestions on how long to wait. Are there any others that have gone though this that have returned to the game. Thanks

Sounds like fun! You will definitely want to run that by Dr. Almanza or whatever medical professional on his team handles patient aftercare. I know my surgeon would not have cleared me for something like ethat for six weeks.

My doctor cleared me to ride horses at 4 weeks. I waited for 6 weeks as my horse has a bit of a buck especially after not being ridden. I didn't want to have issues in case my ride became and unplanned contact sport as in contacting the ground.

I second Bufflehead my guess is my surgeon would have recommended 6 weeks for contact sports but I also had a hiatal hernia repair.

I do roller derby as well. I didn't play this season, since I had my surgery in September and that's when our season starts. I have every intention of playing next season though. I'll be a year post-op by then. If your seasons are similar, I don't think there would be any reason for you not to be able to play again in the fall. Your incisions will be healed up in a matter of weeks post op and I know I personally was cleared for all lifting and intense exercise at two months post-op.

I was cleared to do full body contact sparring (martial arts) after 12 weeks. Kicks to the stomach aren't a good idea after stomach surgery. I'd assume roller derby can be pretty rough on your guts, too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
