Am I going through STARVATION MODE?!

Recommended Posts

I am a week post op and I am having such a hard time eating enough??? I was recently told my other bloggers that I am not eating enough and am sending my body into starvation mode and will not lose any weight. I am currently on full liquids and I refuse to eat any more broth! All I will eat is SF Italian ice and crystal light and I might only drink or eat one of those a day. I do not feel hungry and when I do I have a few bites and I'm done. So many people kept telling me I'm not eating enough! But why force myself if I'm physically not hungry!! I'm not losing any weight and not passing any BM's ! This is so frustrating and I'm so scared I'm going to fail! I don't start purées until Monday!

Advice desperately needed!!

On full liquids you should be drinking Protein Drinks. Does your surgeon or nutritionist have them on your list?

I second what Chele H wonders! You should be having Protein drinks and plenty of liquids right now.

What exactly are you getting in daily calorie and Protein wise?

It's not that it's hard to drink, I just get full and have no more appetite

I'll try that... But is that still enough? And should I force myself if I'm not hungry?

It's better than what you are doing right now. You need Protein to heal your body. You doctor should have given you your Protein goals. Mine was 60-75g a day and it took me at least 3 months to reach that, but I could get in a Protein shake each day, 1/2 at a time. I blended it with ice to add liquid and just sipped at it all day.

I thought the whole point of being sleeved is to teach us to listen to our stomachs? So that we do not overeat and lose our old habits...

I have read several articles that talk about starvation mode is a myth -- it was based on a study of guys in Minnesota or Montana or some place really cold. BUT -- I agree, work on that protein! And don't let the head hunger get you down - we all have been through it!

You just do what you think is best, ok? :D

@0CheekzVSG I have not had surgery yet but had this same concern so I'd like to follow to see how others deal with it.

I'm also following your journey on YouTube...best of luck to you!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
