Walking nauseates me

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 weeks post- RNY, 2 weeks post adhesion release for a bowel obstruction. I'm limited to walking right now, which is fine because it's my favorite form of activity. I thought I got nauseated on a two mile walk a few days ago because I forgot to take Water with me. It took hours to recover. The next day I drank plenty of Water during my walk, still got nausea but it didn't last as long. Saw my Nut yesterday and she feels I may be doing too much at once. Did 4 one mile walks yesterday and was fine. Today, I slowed it down a bit but tried 1.5 miles because I won't have time for 4 walks. Nausea is back, it's kind of really frustrating. Ok, I just wanted to rant.

Is it hot where you live? It was about 90 degrees where I live yesterday and after a 3 mile walk I felt kind of crummy for awhile too. Even if you are fully hydrated the sun can contribute to making you sick, especially when you are not on regular food yet, still recovering from a major surgery, and possibly not fully recovered from all the drugs and anesthesia. Stick an ice pack in the back of your sports bra or somewhere near the core of your body. It will melt all over you by the time you're done, but it will keep your core temp down and you may not get sick.

Not hot yet. 70's the other day and cloudy and cool today. My Nut had a good theory that walking pulls blood away from your core to your extremities and that healing requires extra blood flow and nausea is my body's way of saying, "slow down". I hate when my body and mind don't agree!

Hmm, that's a thought. I have to remember my body is different now. I'm still on soft foods, maybe a string cheese. Thanks.

Btw, @@LipstickLady I stalked all of your posts in the last week. Funny, inspiring and good advice...I'm kind of jealous.

I was going to recommend the same thing. I always bookend my workout with Protein. If I'm up super early (rare) I eat scrambled eggs. Most days I make a large Protein Drink (20 -24 ounces). I can drink that before, during and after my workout. It gives me the fuel I need but isn't too heavy on my belly. It also helps keep me hydrated.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
