I am 15 days out from surgery. I am still struggling to get my Protein and fluid goals. I don't think I have met either goal a single days since surgery. I have a really hard time with Protein shakes, most of them are just gross to me. I've tried adding protein to food, and again is just gross.

For my fluids, I sip on Water all day, but I usually only manage about 40 oz. I need tips on increasing both. I worry about this everyday because I know both are important for me.

Me too! Really harder than I thought!

My new trick is a 2 scoop Breakfast nectar Cappuccino, 50 grams!

Now it may take several re-warms...just like regular coffee ????

Can also mix up vanilla Protein adding it like "cream" to coffee!

Also tried to DIY popcycles with Nectar brand fruit flavors.

But you are right...it is a challenge!

Linda

I find adding something like Mio or Crystal Light or making Decaf iced tea helps me with my fluids.

Try some Syntrax nectar Protein powders. They come in individual serving packets too, so you can taste several different flavors and find a few you like. They have a good variety of fruity flavors and taste much lighter, more like juice. For me, they are way easier to drink than the sweeter Vanilla/Chocolate ones. I have a Cappuccino one over ice every morning.

I am 18 days out and i've been having the same issues. In fact i was becoming undernurished and my nutritionist told me to start drinking smoothies made with greek yogurt, fairlife milk, and fruit. All Protein is disgusting to me except the Atkins Carmel Cafe shakes, and those have a lot of fat in them, so I was told to limit them to once a day.

As far as Water I was only gettng about 24 oz in.. So my NUT told me to add fruit slices(just dont eat the fruit) So i've been adding lemon and orange slices to my Water. Since surgery I cannot tolerate crystal light. I've also made a batch of the Starbucks Tazo Passion Fruit Iced Tea and I mix in the MInute Maid light 5 calorie lemonade and it helps get fluids in also.

I'm currently choking down an Isopure Zero Carb-- at the very least it helps me get my water in, because for every drink I take I have to chase it with water.

I love GENEPRO Protein Powder. It's tasteless, dissolves in anything. 1 small scoop is 30 grams. I just dissolve 2 a day in anything I'm drinking or eating. Soup, juice, yogurt.... There is no way I could get my Protein with out it. I despise Protein Drinks & the fake sweeteners give me headache.

I'm currently on day 4 after revision surgery. The "trick" I've currently hit on is adding Crystal Light to Isopure. Improves the taste significantly!! This is one of the only ways I know to get 40g in at this point. I also just ordered some GENEPRO Protein powder based on what everyone is saying. It is very hard for me to get the liquids & Protein in - but I'm determined.

I also use this powder, I didn't know I could add it to yogurt I thought it had to be dissolved into a liquid. Thanks for the tip!

By the GENEPRO powder at the very least get the sample pack off their website $3.50 for two servings. Also when I placed my ordered I did it through lucky Vitamin and bought two bags with a coupon code i found and getting free shipping it was $60 for the two bags and that's a two month supply if you do one scoop a day. Well worth it in my opinion!

I mix the Isopure with Water, about half/half and it helps to get it down. I also like the Syntrax Nectar fruit flavors. I'm struggling a little with the unflavored Unjury. I feel like I can taste it. I mix it with tea in the morning and I can manage that, but I tried it with chicken broth and vegetable broth and I just couldn't do it. I will say that most everything I drink at this point (day 4) has Protein in it. I managed ~50g protein, 48 oz Fluid yesterday. Trying for 64 today.

I put it in my refried Beans with melted cheese today. Yum!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
