km30381 2 Posted April 5, 2015 I am scheduled for sleeve surgery on May 26th. Still fighting with insurance but as of right now I am a self pay. As a self pay I can only afford one night in the hospital. Under norman circumstances will this be enough time? I am scheduled for 1st patient in the morning so I can have as much recovery time as possible. Also does anyone know...If I self pay and then win my insurance battle, will they just reimburse me? McButterpants 2,846 Posted April 5, 2015 I was outpatient as well - in at 6:00 am and out by noon. I could have stayed a little later in the day, but felt like I would be more comfortable at our rented condo. I was nervous about the outpatient thing at first, but had no complications. CanyonBaby 1,852 Posted April 5, 2015 Yeah, chat with your surgeon about this one. All surgeons do things differently, some may have one night, mine had me there 2 nights and 3 days, others...who knows. And it will also vary if you have additional surgery (like me...a hernia surprise, so hernia surgery at the same time). That is a VERY important part of your surgery for self-pay...I was self-pay...I paid my program fee, but the hernia repair was an additional cost. Now, my insurance picked that up, but FIND OUT if yours will BEFORE you have the surgery...you don't want any nasty financial surprises. I was not denied insurance, I just didn't want to wait for the INFINITE amount of months for them to get their act together while I was increasing my diabetes complications. They did pay for the hernia repair, no questions asked...why would they...they got the hospital, anesthesia....paid for by ME! All they had to pay was the surgeon, for that part only of the surgery. Kindle 8,667 Posted April 5, 2015 Arrived at surgical center about 9am for preop tests...bloodwork, ECG, chat with nutritionist, cardiologist and surgeons. Surgery around 2 or 3pm. Back in my room by 5pm. Discharged at 9am. Out Shopping by 10am. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted April 5, 2015 I stayed 2 nights (not sure whether that was the doctor's or insurance co's requirements) but I would have been fine going home after one night. If you have an uncomplicated surgery there is no reason not to go home. As for reimbursement with the insurance company, I'm not so sure on that. Especially since this is a surgery that requires a prior authorization. I could see them arguing that there was no prior authorization in place and then deny reimbursement. blondebomb 580 Posted April 5, 2015 normally its a 1 night stay or OB(23 hrs) if there's not anything going on I had hernia repair and had spasms so I stayed another night per my request for IV fluids another day. I asked my surgeon a few months earlier if its a 3 day stay and he said OH no its just over night unless I need another night. you just never know till after you wake up and get going and if you get drink and etc... minniegirl 258 Posted April 5, 2015 My surgeon required two nights, He puts a drain in and doesn't remove it until day three, right before discharge. Amie2790 15 Posted April 6, 2015 I had mine 9:30 in the am. I had to stay overnight. My body love anesthesia and does not care for the medical staff when they suggest I wake up. I didn't stay awake for more than 5 minutes until 8:30 pm that night. And that was me fighting to stay awake to see my parents. It didn't work and I was back out.
