Mel24 51 Posted April 4, 2015 I am an avid spin class girl, and I'll go through 25-32 oz of Water in a 45 minute class. Granted this is a HIIT type interval class so it's level 4-5 heart rate. I am wondering how you get all the water in while exercising? Also can you eventually "gulp" water down again? I am going to be doing a 33 mile ride in August and I want to be able to keep hydrated since it's going to be 85-100 degrees outside. I have a camelback that I wear when I ride. Any info, support would be very helpful. My surgery is scheduled for May 4th and they told me if I am feeling good, they will clear me for all exercise 3 weeks post-op. That way I can keep training for the ride.
McButterpants 2,846 Posted April 4, 2015 I do hot yoga...yoga in a 104 degree room for 80 minutes. Dehydration anyone? :-) I am one of those people that cannot drink a lot of Water at one time - there are some sleevers that can eventually gulp Water, I am not one of them. I make sure I focus on my water the night before my 5:30 am class the next morning. YOu want to make sure you are hydrated before - it's harder to hydrate and stay hydrated DURING the exercise session. It's easier to go to your workout session adequately hydrated and sip thru out the session. During my yoga session or a gym workout, I sip thru it - I know I can sip three times...any more than that and it hurts. I sip when I get the opportunity. AvaFern 3,516 Posted April 4, 2015 I used to gulp Water by the bottle during workouts. I do boxing and jiu jitsu and I would easily go through 2, 20oz bottles each hour. I was very concerned I would be dehydrated because I can't take more than a few swallows at a time anymore, but it hasn't been an issue for me. I now drink maybe 1.5 bottles of Water on a really tough 20 hour practice, and often even less than that. I just make sure I drink consistently throughout the day and later that night and it all seems to even out in the end.
KingMoose 238 Posted April 5, 2015 If you stay adequately hydrated daily then the "sipping just keeps you hydrated. During my harder workouts I make sure I drink more the day before and sip on Gatorade G2 during my workout. The key is to make sure you are well hydrated for a couple days prior to your event! It is MUCH HARDER to re-hydrate than it is to stay constantly hydrated. The easiest way to Judge your hydration level is to check the color of your urine, it should be no darker than light lemonade. Preferably clear as you get closer to the event. GOOD LUCK!
Noragretz 28 Posted April 5, 2015 I'm 7 months out and I can gulp down 1/2 of a 16.9 oz bottle at once on a good day on an empty stomach. If I stay focused I can drink the whole bottle in 10 minutes. But my tummy has to be empty.
Mel24 51 Posted April 6, 2015 Thank you for the insight! I know to stay hydrated, but I never noticed if I gulp when I am dehydrated. I will pay attention to that over the next couple of weeks and see if I see a correlation to how much I drink during spin class.

ThinnieMinnie2B 17 Posted April 6, 2015 I'm 3 months post op and I can take pretty decent swigs of Water. Yes I use a straw. I haven't actually tried "chugging" water. I'd imagine it might cause discomfort. But nothing extremely serious.
GenaW828 117 Posted April 6, 2015 I'm 4 mos out and can gulp Water down...but in my exercise classes I have to wait about 45 sec before starting again or that water will come up
KingMoose 238 Posted April 6, 2015 I still do not gulp, not that I can't but don't want to go from gulp to chug.
Noragretz 28 Posted April 6, 2015 Chug, gulp... I guess I'd rather say that I chug the Water rather than gulp it. What happens when you chug too much??? Lol, You can't get anymore down, your stomach is so full you can't even swallow and you have to go dump out what's in your mouth.... Unfortunately I've done that a few times, and is very uncomfortable.
jess9395 5,449 Posted April 7, 2015 I'm a year and a half out and can gulp some... Not like before but one gulp and then a few breaths then another for about 3-4 gulps
MichiganChic 3,262 Posted April 7, 2015 I can drink about 1/4 to 1/3 of a bottle at a time if I'm totally empty. Some days a little less but I have no trouble getting Water in

Surgeon says the liquid is also sitting in my esophagus. Not comfortable but hated the hospital. IV forced Fluid with magnesium is not cool.
