Hi Everyone My name is Shannon I am from Philadelphia, PA . I have had my lap band removed because of severe GERD. I am 5ft 4in my weight is 208 pounds my doctor thinks I should get gastric bypass. I just had a endo bravo percedure that revealed my esophagus has a lot of damage from heartburn. I am really afraid of losing to much weight with bypass. I asked my doctor if I could get the gastric sleeve. He said it will make my heartburn worse. I don't want to lose to much weight and look sick.

If you have GERD, you need RNY gastric bypass. That is the best option. Your doctor is right. Most people are worried about losing too little weight rather than too much. But at 208 pounds, I think you can lose quite a bit and still not reach the danger level.

I understand your concern. If you went back a hundred years, people were considered healthy if they carried a little extra weight. That is because when a sickness struck, generally people would lose weight and this could lead to their death. With a little extra weight, one could struggle until the immune system kicked in.

The RNY gastric bypass ended my 14 year battle with severe GERD immediately, all GERD medication gone. I'm sure if you would start to lose too much, your physician would likely review your diet plan.

I had a mini gastric bypass one week ago and my day of surgery weight was 185.

It's hard to explain, it's easier to just look up comparison images between the two. Basically it has a longer bypass and only one anastomoses. The operating time and recovery time and risk of complications are all less but weight loss is just as good if not better long term. It got a bad name for awhile because of risk for bile reflux but that's since been rectified through a new adaption to the procedure and it's making a comeback. Its been around over 15 years.

From everything I have read and heard sleeve makes GERD worse. As long as you are getting your Protein and taking your Vitamins you won't loose to much weight. Your body will stop losing weight when it needs to.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
