So many opinions. What's right?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am new so this has probably been asked 1000 times over, but I am confused about the pre-op diet. If my doctor says full liquids with Jello, broth, Protein Shakes for two weeks then why do people have different diets? He said it's for safety during surgery because the two weeks on liquids will put my body into ketosis and it will start eating the fat around my liver, shrinking it and someone has to hold your liver out of his way during the procedure so it makes it safer. so, if that makes it safe I don't get why there are so many different diets?

Every dr has their own preference. Some are more cautious than others with their preop diet but the biggest thing is you should always follow your drs instructions no matter what. The liver does need to be shrunk because if it isnt then the dr wont be able to lift the liver to perform the procedure. My dr only requires me to do 1000 cal for 5 days then 3 days of Clear Liquids with Protein Shakes. So every dr has a different opinion and wants things done a different way, but just know that no matter what they all want the same thing :)

My doctor request pretty much the same thing. I am working towards that now, I don't have approval or a date as of yet.

I agree with these guys and say, "Just stick with your doctor's recommendations." He's in the best position to know your needs and what has worked the best for WLS success.

Since there is no one universal, proven, absolute, "this is the best way to do it", WLS method for doctors to follow, they have to rely on their experience, intuition, training and guidance from fellow surgeons to make the best choices for their patients.

I too am very interested in all of the pre-op diet variations - My doctor doesn't even have a set diet, it's on a case-by-case basis.

Just another way that we all have our own unique journey! :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
