miller1109 116 Posted April 2, 2015 Why are we not supposed to have caffeine? I emailed my NUT but haven't gotten an answer. I know she will answer. But just wanted to know what everyone else thinks? Or has been told.
TammyDTM 391 Posted April 2, 2015 Caffeine makes you pee. Caffeine is acidic. You don't want acid in your stomach. You don't want to drink your Water for nothing.
emtscott54 108 Posted April 2, 2015 Caffeine keeps you from absorbing Calcium and nutrients that are vital after surgery.
blacktee92675 120 Posted April 2, 2015 All of the other posts are correct, that said, I'm not giving up coffee forever. Told my doc, he said everything in moderation. Regarding acid. If acid is an issue then try making a cold brew coffee toddy. https://toddycafe.com. This will make a very concentrated coffee the will keep in the fridge for about one week. Just add hot or cold Water to the concentrated brew when ready to serve. The process cuts down on the acidity. You might also enjoy some of the rich flavors that you're now able to taste because of the reduced acid.

blacktee92675 120 Posted April 2, 2015 I've heard Decaf is fine, but I'm still planning on having regular black coffee. :-)

miller1109 116 Posted April 2, 2015 Caffeine makes you pee. Caffeine is acidic. You don't want acid in your stomach. You don't want to drink your Water for nothing. I am 52 EVERYTHING I drink makes me pee. I pee about every 1 1/2 hours. And I work for a urologist. Water intake=urine output. So I doubt caffeine could possibly make it any worse. I did drink coffee with caffeine today and all it did was speed me up. No acid so I guess for me it was ok.

efierke 60 Posted April 3, 2015 I was advised to cut back but never was told "you have to give it up". I work nights in a hospital - it would be nearly impossible anyways. Yes, caffiene can dehydrate you, but only very slightly. coffee can be an stomach irritant for some, but it doesn't bother everyone. Moderation is the key, as with everything.
