5 days to go and having anxiety

Recommended Posts

I have researched thoroughly.

I have kept all my appointments.

I have clearance from the insurance.

I have a surgery date - April 6th.

I have filled out ALL of the paperwork for everyone.

I have lost 9 pounds in 9 days on this pre-op diet.

I am ready in every way.

BUT...

This morning I have had two panic attacks.

Anyone else have these?

Advice? Encouragement?

my thoughts are with you and I haven't been cleared yet for surgery but I think from what I have read here that what you are feeling is pretty normal. You are not alone.

I'm right there with you as mine is scheduled for 4/13. Read a GREAT post a few moments ago. I hope it helps you. It did me.

Managing your anxiety is the most important thing you can do to make your surgical experience go easier. I used to work as a CCLS and gave pre-surgical tours as part of our services. I think having that knowledge made things easier and a little less scary.

I guess my questions for you are:

  • What are your worries/fears?
  • What can you do to alleviate those fears?

I have found that figuring out those 2 things and practicing what to do to manage them makes all the difference in the world. Even something as simple as learning to do a little bit of deep breathing/meditation makes all the difference in the world.

Distractions/diversions are another things that help. For example, I have to have routine MRI's of my head each year. It's 1½ hours in a claustrophobic tube with loud banging. It can be challenging to stay absolutely still for that. My distraction is to sing songs in Spanish just under my breath. It helps me focus on something other than that tube and it helps me regulate my breathing so I'm not panicky.

So:

  • Identify your fear
  • Develop a plan of action
  • Practice that plan of action

Begin with the end in mind! I too am scheduled to be sleeved shortly. Every time I feel that overwhelming feeling of "this is it, this is forever", I try to focus on my end goal; to live a healthy life! A little bit of discomfort and struggle will all be worth it in the end. Good luck, best wishes, and prayers going your way!

You've done so well pre-op that you are well on your way to a great surgery and recovery. Anxiety is perfectly normal. I didn't fear the surgery. I feared I wouldn't be able to "do it" after the surgery. I feared I would be hungry or feel inclined to binge it.

In other words, I feared myself more than the surgery.

For me, the surgery was easy (I just slept...I like sleeping), Then the first few days are a bit rough, but pain meds rock. The post-hospital recovery was faster than I expected. Because you did your homework, you know how the recovery can vary for people and also that the post-op liquids can be harder for some than others. liquids are even more important than food. Fat is stored energy...we all had plenty of that.

I know you'll look back and wonder what you were so worried about...as you're dropping the pounds to the new you. :)

Best of luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
