I had gastric bypass on 3/25. I have 1 incision on my left side that hurts severely when I stand up. I was able to ease the pain yesterday with my pain meds but today it literally takes my breath away. Is this normal? I'm fine when laying down or reclined. I need to move around but it's unbearable.

Yes this is normal the first week when I would get up I would apply pressure on it (basically hold my side) and then slowly got up. Surprising things do get better. Hang in there.

I had my RNY on 3/16 and had the same exact pain. I went to my doctor and he told me it was from having to cut through the abdominal wall and then it's perfectly normal. He told me it would go away within a week or two and prescribed me Valium to try and relax.

I did the same as Mookiemen and held my side when transferring and the pain went away. Eventually it did subside and it's now it's gone

I second the posters above. Deeply unpleasant, but completely normal.

Yes, my medication only last 2-3 hours and it's back when standing. I can take short like maybe 5 minute walks and it starts hurting again.

You're still very early in the recovery process. My worse pain was the left side as well. And, like the others, I found holding my stomach where the painful incisions were, when getting up, sitting down, esp. when bending over, helped. My doctor's office gave me a binder but I didn't find it to be very helpful. I continued to have incision pain for 4 weeks before it finally went away.

I had the same issue when I had my surgery last May. That is incision where to put the biggest tool so it's going to be sore. I had to hold that side for a while when walking around. It's been 20 months and I still get sore there and pull that muscle easily. It took longer to heal too.

I had my surgery on the 24th. That was and still is the only real place I have had pain. Doesn't hurt unless I move a certain way and then it wants to drop me. Also sneezing does not help. Good time for surgery considering my allergies.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
