Lap Band out. Now waiting game

Recommended Posts

I got my lap band in 2006 and loved it. I lost over 100lbs and felf great. However I had to have it removed last November 2014 due to slippage. Trying to get approved for a sleeve. I talked to two different Doctors, both recomended to have the surgerys done seperatly, giving time for the scar tissue, etc. to heal. I am now fighting with my insurance company. My wonderful Doctor even called and had a Peer to Peer in my defence trying to get insurance approval. I have written 2 appeal letters and have been denied 3 times. It is now in the hands of a third party. I was wondering if there are others out there with similar storys. I am going throught with the surgery regardless, even if I have to self pay but its going to wipe out all my savings. FYI I have gained 50+ lbs.

I'm having my band taken out and the sleeve done in one procedure. My doc didn't seem to really be worried. Good luck!

Wow, I hope they get that worked out for you! I opted for the sleeve for just that reason. I have a friend who did the band and had to go back in twice. I am self pay and I knew I did not want to risk having to go back in for issues. I bought as much post op insurance as I could for any complications with the sleeve - so far so good! I do have coverage for 3 years but they say most complications are within 90 days and I am now 6 months. I hope you are approved!

Hi, Im thrilled for finding this app, I did my Lapband 3 years ago it went great! Until 4 months ago I started having horrible reflux episodes while sleeping. About 6 events per night coughing terribly and I tried everything even sleeping in a seated position. So my Lapband had to be unfilled, my esophagus was swollen and dilated and dr does not recommend filling it again, in these months with my unfilled band I have gained 18 pounds. I'm still at this moment a low BMI patient but I'm going for the sleeve on May 5th. Has anyone had this experience? How is the sleeve on low BMI patients? I would appreciate to know about someone with similar experience

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
