Post surgery work out

Recommended Posts

Hi All!

Once you were cleared to exercise what work outs did you find helpful that had the most weight loss? I'm thinking about getting a personal trainer but not sure about the cost especially if it's something I can do.

Any suggestions?

Well I work out 4 times a week doing 90 mins of cardio and I do have a personal trainer but I only have him for twice a week for a month because I want him to guide me so I can do it on my own. He told me to take yoga or pilates to help with core strenght and I do at home with free videos. When I hit a stall which I have twice already and think I'm about to hit again..I do the pouch test and then really get a sweat going at the gym and get my heart rate pumping. I just tried HIIT too which is great with the mix up and is suppose to help your body. I hope you find what works for you. If you have bad knees or joints swim. I do that too at the end of my cardio to give my knees a break!

Thanks so much for the information! In addition to the 90 days of cardio do you work out the other days with weights? I like the idea of getting a personal trainer for a month just to show me how and what to do. How long before you were cleared by the dr to start exercising?

I was cleared for cardio after two weeks and cleared for weightlifting after a month. I still took it easy for a couple months. Due to the low caloric intake, I didn't work out quite as hard as I did pre-op. I just listened to my body and started working out a bit harder as my energy increased.

Part of the secret for me is to not overdo it. I don't push myself to increase weightlifting or cardio every week or to push myself when my energy is low. I want the workouts to be enjoyable. I also find that a heart rate monitor is great biofeedback and it keeps me motivated with showing my caloric burn.

My usual schedule is 3 days of 30-minute cardio (elliptical, treadmill, or swimming) + 30 minutes weights and 2 days of 50-60 minutes cardio.

I was cleared to resume exercise after 2 weeks and Water aerobics after 3. I was told I could do whatever I could handle. I mostly do aquafit so I resumed that. We use Water weights so I get cardio and weight training. I also use hand weights at home. I recently also started doing kettleball workouts and riding my bike occasionally. I believe weight lifting is important for toning, but I also think consistency is key. I work out 5 - 6 days a week. Basically I make sure to get some exercise in everyday.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
