how long did people take off work for recovery?

Recommended Posts

6 days for me at a desk job. Had no pain whatsoever coming back. First week was definitely tired but doable. I probably would have been bored out of my mind any longer, however a midday nap during those days would have been nice! But then again I had a 3 hour time difference to overcome and my last day before work we all sprung forward so those time changes, travel across countries and recovering from surgery all played into my experience.

My job is inventory control supervisor which requires me to do lots of walking daily. I worked Monday/ 11/3. Surgery was 11-4 and I got up and started walking that day. 11/5 I walked 1/2 mile up & down the hospital halls. 11/6 I walked a mile in the hAlls prior to discharge from the hospital. And went back to work 11/10 walking anywhere between 2- 6 miles/ day just at work.

I think you can drive as soon as you aren't taking any pain meds. Not 100% sure, maybe someone else will chime in on that.

Once off pain meds for 24 hours is the general rule.

I'm glad to hear people who took the shorter times didn't have any issues. I have to go back to work at 10 days post op and have been so nervous about it. I've seen people say they took off 6 wks!

Really? First full day back and I was so exhausted, my co-teacher took my afternoon duty for me so I could go home.

This is good to know, because I'm not sure when I will be having the surgery. I just know it will be sometime this year! I work an office job, so I'm not doing a lot of physical stuff at work anyways. I am also a full-time college student (graduating this year), so that whenever I have surgery I am going to have to work out something with my professors so that I don't miss any major assignments. I wish I did know for sure when I was having it, so that I could prepare accordingly. This summer and fall are going to be fairly busy for us as a family, because my oldest daughter is going to college and we still have campus visits to do and what not.

I quit my job of 15 years and am on a 6 month sabbatical. They keep calling to see if I want to go back, but I left because it was time to take a break from traveling ~300,000 air-miles per year. I'm two months into my sabbatical, and (along with WLS) it's been one of the best decisions of my life. Not an easy decision for a single income household, but one of the best...

I was out for 8 days and then only did a shortened schedule for the first week back. Very little pain, was mostly just tired more than normal.

I was out for 5 days. Surgery was on a Wednesday and I returned the following Wednesday.

In regards to the walking 20-30 min. I broke it up into many small walks. I live on a cul-de-sac and it took 10 mins to circle. I just did that a few times a day while recovering.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
