What's your complication plan?

Recommended Posts

What is everyone's plan if there are complications after you get back home? I am more afraid of that then the surgery itself. It's the reason I am having second thoughts.

What kind of complications are you worried about?

I am a year out from surgery and had ZERO complications. Well, maybe a little nausea after waking up from surgery. No gas pain, no leaks, no heart burn (ever), no food aversions, no throwing up. I could have gone back to work a week after surgery. I think I went back 12 days later. While there is a chance of complications, the percentages are really low. It's good to educate yourself, but don't let the fear of something happening cripple you.

I assume you have a support person, the Dr and nurse will give you discharge orders, things to look for and what to do if you experience any of them. not much else you need as far as a plan.

I know it can be nerve racking waiting for the day, trust everyone, they have no reason to lie, it will be just fine.

Liannatx, any of the numerous things I have read about on these boards like leaks, severe Gerd, not being able to swallow etc.

You might want to mention that your surgery would be in Mexico. I don't think some of those who've replied realize the'yre in the Mexico forum.

I'm second guessing also. I don't want to be that 1 out of 500 who gets leaks and bleading. I don't want to be hospitalized. If it's gas pain or nausea I'll be ok but life threatening things no

I was the same way....I could handle surgery and everything that went with it, but it was the postop complications that scared me. Not only could they threaten my life or at the very least, make me feel miserable, but I would have been financially ruined. My insurance wouldn't cover anything and owning my own business means no work = no income. And that is why I researched the hell out of my options and went with who I felt was the best surgeon at the best location. I did not let $$$ play a prt in my decision. Fortunately I had a wonderful recovery and my PCP has taken care of my followup bloodwork. As for complications, he would have directed me to the appropriate specialist if I had needed it.

First, there are complications with anything. Do you ladies have Hlth insurance? I do but the sleeve isn't covered. If there are any complications, I will get seen by my PCP and go from there.

That's one of my concerns as well. I do have health insurance through my job however WLS is excluded and so are any related procedures and or complications. One of my main concerns is problems with my gallbladder. If in a few months I do have a problem with my gallbladder and I disclose that I have had WLS will they not pay for it because they think it's related to the Vsg? Or will I be able to justify that anyone at anytime can have gallbladder issues?

This is my concern as well. I've read alot of complication free success stories but when i read one story I worry. There is one person that i know going thru some complications. Once i know that she is back to normal health I'll be okay

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
