@@Alex Brecher. Totally agree. I drink lactose/fat free milk, eat eggs and full fat cheese. I also eat about a cup of homemade salt free popcorn a few times a week. Before my surgery I ate MANY cups, MANY nights. But my main foods are lean Proteins and broccoli. So, dieting, including the paleo, and the many others I tried, still let me to surgery. Why? volume. I was eating too much. No matter how healthy the foods. I was eating too much. Now I eat, feel my restriction, and stop. I'm so happy I chose this gift for myself.

I have tried following paleo post-op, but even though most of my one-year labs were great, my cholesterol was alarming. I am still going to avoid so-called "foods" made in a factory, but the yummy bacon, coconut oil, and nuts are going to have to be severely reduced. I love fruit, but it escalates my carbs so quickly. For the most part, I will have to stay with high Protein, non-starchy veggies, and a few berries now and then. Because of orthopedic and reduced post-stroke mobility, a thousand calories or fifty carbs throws me into maintenance.

@@Miss Mac, before dumping your yummy coconut oil, etc. have the lab do a full cholesterol profile. Even traditional mainstream medicine has finally caught up to the research and admitted that high cholesterol has NOTHING to do with heart disease. Read this: http://chriskresser.com/the-diet-heart-myth-cholesterol-and-saturated-fat-are-not-the-enemy

If you still aren't convinced, here is a good book on the whole cholesterol issue http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1936608383/?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=ur2&tag=livilavidalow-20

Besides the "good" and the "bad" cholesterol - there are subtypes, and the large fluffy ones are good, the small dense particles are bad.

Overall, triglyceride number is a better predictor of health than cholesterol.

Agree being vegetarian I don't eat bacon, but I eat eggs, and use coconut oil frequently. I have my choletsral is always within range and my carbs can go high as long as it from green leafy veg/fruit and Beans. Unless you are genetically disposed to high cholesterol coconut oil isn't a bad thing.

@@Miss Mac do you have metabolic syndrome? the bariatric nutritionist told me that i had to balance all of my Protein to carbs 2:1 at every meal otherwise I would not lose weight. she also said i had to eat low carb. i would tell you the grams but i forget as it would change as time went on. I think I started at 80g Protein and 40g carbs.

Note that I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV :-)

@@BLERDgirl what would you consider "high" in regard to carbs from fruit and veggies? why are these superior carbs to carbs from whole grains? thanks for clarifying!

My carbs tend to run in the 50's sometimes 60's. From what I've read most people here tend to try and stay within the 20 - 40 range or their weight loss slows down. I'm not trying to say they are superior to whole grains but my carbs are pretty much all from plant based sources and not breads or processed food like pastas and white rice. So I get the Fiber and nutrients from those plant based sources, which means less pills I have to take by mouth to make up for it and no Constipation because my body can break them down easier than processed foods. Since my body is hyper sensitive, the more natural I can keep things, the better chance I have of not triggering an allergic reaction.

Drmeow, Thanks for the reminder about Chris Kressor. I have not read any of his materials for a while. It is kind of late to get into it tonight, so I will follow up on your response tomorrow. I do have some of his info downloaded into a primal/paleo folder on my laptop. I just neeed to review it.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
