Hey there! I had surgery 1/27. I can drink coffee, I have been able too for a couple of weeks, but its one of the few things that just makes my stomach not feel great.

My surgeon said no caffeine, period, as sleeve patients are now at a greater risk of a GI bleed. I drink decaffeinated coffee, and did that before surgery.

(He also said no alcohol, period -- not an issue for me as I don't drink anyway).

I was allowed to have a caffeinated beverage once per day as of 6 weeks out according to my dietitian. However! I don't drink coffee at all so my only experimentation with caffeine has been iced tea or other flavored drinks that may have a little caffeine in them.

I was allowed coffee on discharge as part of full fluids. I have two cups straight up every morning. Has never bothered me.

Since docs really vary on this though, ask your surgeon and follow his/her directions.

I was allowed coffee 30 days post op as long as it was mixed with a lot of cream.

This is the one area where I'm bad. I drink tons of fluids, don't eat carbs or sweets, no sodas, no booze, no juices, and I exercise 5-6 times a week..... but I'm drinking more coffee than ever. Like 3 cups of regular and 2 cups of Decaf. My stomach seems to tolerate it just fine, although I sometimes wonder if it's contributing to my hunger pangs. I still take a Protonix pill every day, and that probably helps.

My surgeon said Decaf only, which was fine. I drink decaf iced coffee throughout the day, maybe 40-48 oz worth. I mix in a few tablespoons of chocolate or vanilla Protein drink and Fiber powder. I did have two cups of regular coffee a week ago and thought I was going to come out of my skin. That was my first caffeine in a year...I guess I was well weaned off of it.

I waited about 3-4 weeks before having coffee. I drink 16 to 24 oz. per day and haven't had any problems.

I started drinking coffee in the hospital, post-op. I hated the taste of it. It was so weird! I used to love the taste of it! Now, at 7+ weeks out, I only drink one cup a day, but I like the taste again! Good luck with those taste buds!!!

I was told coffee was considered a Fluid & fine from the beginning. But they also said Decaf, then said we could have one small caffeinated drink per day. I am confused.

Decaf within a few weeks. I waited a few months before doing any caffeine. These days I do about 1 large coffee in the morning. No caffeine the rest of the day.

I allow myself 4oz of black hazelnut caffeinated coffee per day since 30 days post surgery. I then must drink an extra 16 ounces of Water because of my indulgence. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
