Psycholgists, testing etc...

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of people talking about seeing a psych about their surgery, and some people`s surgery being pushed back after some testing etc...

I am just going to get it in TJ April 27th, without pre op appointments and all that stuff. Is that just something a lot of your insurance needs? And what could be the possible things that would push back this surgery? My doctor is just saying I need 3 days pre op liquid diet and two weeks post op on liquid as well. What huge factors am I missing here?

Some insurance requires it. Some doctors require it.

My insurance didn't require pysch, nutrition, stress test, EGD, etc... But my surgeon required those things.

He wants to set each person up for success. Pysch to make sure you are mentally prepared for it, nutritinal counseling to make sure you are aware of how the pre-op diet works and what your diet will be like after surgery, stress test to make sure your heart is ok for anesthesia and surgery and to make sure you don't have any blood clots, and an EGD to make sure that all is good down there and check for a hernia so that there aren't any surprises.

It covers his butt, and makes it a safer surgery for the patient.

Are these things I should be doing? Can I just make a doctor app to do all this?

My insurance and surgeon required it. They're checking for things like, do you have the commitment to make the necessary changes to be successful, are you doing this for your health or someone else? Tendencies to transfer food addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex, etc, suicidal thoughts, etc. They want to make sure you understand it's not a "quick fix" but a lifetime commitment. Not a big deal at all. Several paper\pencil tests and an hour interview. Mine didn't require anything post op and I've not felt like I needed therapy, (though I was prepared for that if I felt like I needed it.)

My insurance requires it...Am already a nut case LOL...i had the nut crying along with me, turns out a perfectly normal...and all these years of me considering my self a nut case was uncalled for...LOL but it a basic test to see how ready are you for this life changing experience...Does one have an addicting personality...the sort of thing, good luck!!!

I'm sure you could go to your primary and ask about getting some of these tests done to make sure you are healthy enough for surgery.. and you can always do nutritional and pysch counseling yourself

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
