HELP! 1st, 2nd, 3rd PBs

I was tightened on Wednesday morning. That afternoon I had 3 sips of orange juice and PBed... although I don't think this was a PB it was more like wretching awefulness to me. That night I did fine, liquids the rest of the night. Thursday I did ok, liquids all day and I had one scrambled egg before I went to bed. Well today, I started the day with a Protein Shake (about 2 hours after I got up), I only had maybe 4 or 5 sips and it came back up. Liquids for a few hours, then a little bit ago I tried some chicken salad (it's on my mushies list), and it came up, only THIS TIME....there was a little bit of red in it, I hate to say it was blood but I'm guessing it was. When my doctor does fills, he uses the machine, whatever it's called, that lets you watch the Fluid go in, so since he just saw my band Wednesday I don't see how I could have a slip. Maybe I'm too tight, can that cause a little blood? It's Friday night and I'm wondering if I can at least wait until Monday to call the doctor's office... but I don't want to be having problems with my band, I've done soooo good so far. I hadn't vomited at all since I was banded in March until this last fill. Any advice? Help!

I don't understand something, if you couldn't keep liquids down, why were you eating solids? chicken is a solid unless it is put through a blender.

Even if it was a soft food, if you can't keep liquids down, why eat soft foods?

If you PB you MUST stop eating or drinking anything for six hours to give your stoma time to heal. Then finish that day with liquids only. If you eat food on top of a swollen stoma you are asking for trouble.

With a slip people *typically* PB/vomit whole blood and blood clots.

I don't have the answers to those questions, I've never had this problem, so I didn't know how to handle it. Didn't know to be on liquids the remainder of the day if I PB. After I got a fill I got instructions to be on Clear Liquids that day, full liquids the next then mushy. I had chicken salad because it's on my mushies list and it was the third day, which to me, ment I should have mushies. So after a PB stop all liquids for 6 hours including Water? Also, like I said, I don't think PB even describes it, it there was coughing and a horrible feeling. I always though PB sounded kinda easy, like you just kinda have some food come up when you burp, soooo not what's going on with me so far.

I haven't had a PB (hope I never do) but I've never heard anyone say it was "easy". Most people I've heard say it is similar to throwing up. I may be wrong here but that's exactly what it sounds like to me. You just have to lay off until things settle down and I would stay on liquids for a bit. If you are concerned, call your doctor now but I would definitely call on Monday either way.

I definitely think you need to stay on liquids until you can see your doctor,but you should do that ASAP. You are too tight and your stoma is irritated, to boot.

I don't think 6 hours without Water is a good idea, however. Dehydration is a bad thing. Loss of electrolytes is, too. Think about the SOP for stomach flu....plenty of liquids. Try warm, sweet tea or warm Jello Water (regular or SF).

So-called PBs (I really don't like that term) can be anything from just bending over and it comes up to a horrible, deliberate attempt to get something unstuck. The tighter you are, the easier it is to PB.

Sliming is something different. It is exactly what the name implies: spitting up slime - sometimes for hours. For me, sliming was a "newbie" thing. I haven't slimed for ages.....I guess our bodies get used to the band or something.

One more thing....do not be lured in by the increased weight loss afforded by a too-tight fill. In the end, it's not worth it. Trust me on this....I am recovering from a dilated esophagus from being too tight. The unfill resulted in a 20 pound GAIN.

Hlayne, you do need to see your doctor for a possible unfill. My advise to you now would be to try and stay hydrated which means you may need to be on liquids until Monday. PLEASE DO NOT DRINK ANYTHING COLD, this will only make you close up even more. As a matter of fact, drink warm tea prior to trying a Protein shake & room temperature Water. I have been there & had to do it in order to get some relief. Slim Fast has shakes that are not so thick so you might want to consider that until you can get to the doctor on Monday but drink it straight from the can, do not chill.

Are you under any stress or is it that time of month for you? These are things that will make your band tighten up & cause you to PB. If that is the case, then just take it easy for a couple of days & you'll be fine. The band always lossen-up after a couple of day.

If you're feeling week or dehydrated, call your doctor. You may need to go to the emergency room for fluids. As previously stated, dehydration is nothing to play with. I've only had 1 unfill but my doctor was willing to come back to the office at 8PM to do it but I told him I could hold out till morning. I lost 7lbs in 3 days which felt great but I could not even swallow my own salva, and that's not good.

You know your body so do what's best for you. Good luck!

I disagree. If someone is going to get dehydrated within six hours they need to be IN an emergency room otherwise six hours is not going to matter one way or another. If they are not keeping anything down (as this person was, she wasn't keeping fluids down) then the stoma needs time to rest and the inflammation needs to go down. If keeping fluids down is impossible then adding more fluids and PB'ing isn't going to help the situation, it will just cause more inflammation.

No fluids AT ALL for six hours, then fluids for the rest of the day in small sips. This takes care of it most of the time.

You know, one of the things about being banded is that one day you are as open as can be and the next day you can't get Water down. A band is a fickle thing. It often times seems as though it has a mind of its own.

I was kind of thinking the same as you. At one point you could get eggs down but later you couldn't get a Protein drink down. Only you know how restricted you are, nobody else.

You will likely be tighter in the morning, it is not at all uncommon to be tight until 12noon. I could be in error but I believe it was Dr. C that said for some folks he fills them according to what they can eat for dinner. Some people are verrry tight in the AMs but wide open in the PMs and the can overeat in the PMs so he fills them accordingly. If they can't eat solids until 5pm, that's okay. For me I'm sorta okay from about 12 noon until 6pm. AMs and PMs are rough for me. Each person is different.

TOM... makes a big difference for some. As Carlene would say, for some during TOM some women are tighter than a virgin on prom night and she's absolutely correct. I couldn't agree with her more.

Stress... for many stress plays a role too. It does for me, if I am stressed I can't even get Water down.

First bite syndrome... a whole 'nother ball game.

Fills... we often times don't know what to expect for a full two weeks after a fill. Sometimes you are tighter than a drum after the fill and wide open in two weeks. Other times, you can be wide open after a fill and at 2 weeks some how, some way... the fill suddenly kicks in.

There is more, but I think those are probably the most common issues with level of restriction.

Keeping all that in mind... just how restricted are you? LOL!!

Try drinking aloe juice. I get it at wal-mart. It taste really bed, but will help with the swollen stoma. Also try egg drop Soup. It will fill you up and also sooth the upset stomach. Can you drink hot tea? What about Hot broth? Try that for 48 hours, then cream Soups for 24-48 hours. Then mushies, then soft foods, then solids. I can't eat scrambled eggs at all, but I can eat steak. Eggs get stuck 100% of the time unless they are really creamy egg salad, think 50/50 mayo and eggs. I was over filled for 8 months and now, it was miserable, but the unfill made all the difference in the world for me. I was able to eat again, and I lost 4 pounds the first week of being able to consume real food again. I would call on monday, but try taking it easy for a day or so and see if that helps. ~Mandy

I am new to all of this and haven't had any complications at all... What is PBing?? Does everyone do it at some time. It sounds scary??

PB'ing is when something you eat or drink comes back up. PB stands for productive burping. ~Mandy

You guys are great! I'm doing much better now. I think I might be one who shouldn't eat for a few hours after I get up. That makes me sad because I know it's healthy to have Breakfast, but I can have a Protein Shake and it seems to be alright. I stayed on liquids for 24 hours after my problems, then I had some super runny mashed potatoes and then later scrambled eggs and everything went down fine. Going to stay on the mushies today and if everything goes ok try something solid tomorrow. The 3 PBs in one day was probably due to me not letting things heal, I looked through all my reading material from my doc and didn't see anything about having to do that. Didn't actually see anything about vomiting at all....I'm sure he'd rather me not PB (I'd rather not do it either!), but since it's obviously going to happen sometimes, I wish I had had some kind of instructions for it. I am soooo glad I have you guys to help with that! :)

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
