Vitamins after surgery

Recommended Posts

I have tried many...I couldn't stomach them. They made me gag. I take a Flintstones Complete chewable twice a day, along with my Celebrate B12 and Calcium.

I am still taking an adult 'gummy' Vitamin (recommended by my MD for the first month or so). He recommends just a regular adult Vitamin, no Iron - unless you are anemic pre-op. I take a Vitamin D, as I was deficient prior to surgery, Vitamin B-12, Biotin (to prevent hair loss and brittle nails), Calcium and fish oil (to help tighten, prevent loose saggy skin - again recommended by my MD). I also take a Vitamin C Gummy every once in a while, as I don't want to get sick again and drinking orange or grapefruit juice is out of the question.

I like whole food based Vitamins. They contain cofactors and micronutrients that just can't be duplicated with synthetic Vitamin products created in a lab. Most of them also contain Probiotics and digestive enzymes. Garden of Life Vitamin Code and Source of Life Gold are two that I have used for years...even before WLS. They come in capsules, tablets, chewable and liquid.

Besides the Multivitamin, I also take Nature's Bounty fish oil/Vitamin D gel cap (most people are Vitamin D deficient with or without WLS) and sublingual B12 (methylcobalamin, not cyanocobalamin) because after VSG you cannot absorb oral B12. Iron and calcium citrate (taken separately) is also recommended for WLS patients, but bloodwork 6 months out showed my Iron and Calcium levels were high so I don't take them anymore. It is important to do bloodwork for life so you can adjust supplements as needed before deficiencies become a problem.

Its actually easy. Whatever you do, do not buy Flintstone's chewable Vitamins as they do not have all the things an adult needs. Instead, buy Centrum chewable vitamins. One or two bottles will be enough for you to be healed and after that you can go back to taking your regular Vitamin. You can also purchase bariatric Vitamins but these aren't really necessary and are far more expensive than Centrum chewable vitamins.< /p>

Remember, after you stomach heals you should be able to swallow your pills as normal.

I was looking at vitamins for post-op and I am overwhelmed with how many brands and formulas.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I haven't yet but I was told by the time I get back I should be able to start taking them. So probably about 5 days. But I'm going to talk to the Dr. And see what he says.

I took Centrum chewables and sublingual B12, d3, Biotin etc, and calcium citrate chews early on until I was healed. Now I just swallow a handful of supplements morning and night and do a chewable Iron with C mid day. I was swallowing the iron my my saturation was a bit low at my 1 year labs so hoping to absorb this one better.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
